can an NA 603 300D be turbo'd - maranellohouse - 08-14-2013 Hi all. I have a 1992 463 G 350TD that has decided to cook itself beyond repair unfortunately. I've just bought a 603 300D to replace it (I haven't got it home yet) and I was wondering is it possible to fit the turbo from my 350 to the 300? The manifolds look to be exactly the same so I think that bit will work but my concern (not including internals) is how I can get an oil feed and return to the turbo. I think the car is going to be painfully slow in NA form specially with it being a LWB. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Ta, Stuart Oh and I would have went for a TD engine but they are few and far between here so the car would have been off the road for a very long time if I was waiting on one. RE: can an NA 603 300D be turbo'd - willbhere4u - 08-14-2013 Yes if the boost is kept in a safe range 10-15psi or so! You will need boost and egt gauges to keep an eye on it don't expect big numbers maybe 200-250 with a built injection pump! I'd also use an intercooler. a stock turbo engine with mods can support around 400hp but has much beefier rods and pistons RE: can an NA 603 300D be turbo'd - maranellohouse - 08-14-2013 (08-14-2013, 05:56 PM)willbhere4u Yes if the boost is kept in a safe range 10-15psi or so! Completely understand what you mean about the boost. Until I get the engine home I won't know if I'm going to be able to match the pick up points for the oil feed to the turbo, if it doesn't is there setup that's been used before to bring oil to the turbo? RE: can an NA 603 300D be turbo'd - Simpler=Better - 08-15-2013 In general you can usually find a pressurized oil line near the filter assembly and "tee" from that for a turbo conversion. I don't know how the 603 is setup, I'm just speaking generally. On domestic cars I've seen people "tee" in at the oil pressure sensor to feed the turbo. RE: can an NA 603 300D be turbo'd - willbhere4u - 08-15-2013 I bet you can hook a tee in to the oil pressure sensor port RE: can an NA 603 300D be turbo'd - maranellohouse - 08-15-2013 (08-15-2013, 11:51 AM)willbhere4u I bet you can hook a tee in to the oil pressure sensor port Guys thanks for jumping in and helping a newbie on my first post. I very much appreciate your guidence so please if you think of anything else that will help me post away. My background is that I have been restoring cars for 30 years, mostly Italian. One of my goals was a G Wagen which I got last year and unfortunately it has almost put my smoke out with the heartache its given me. I know virtually nothing about diesels though and have never had to work on one so im a bit at sea. so i could do with all the help i can get. Oh and I promise to post up how I get on as it might help someone else. RE: can an NA 603 300D be turbo'd - willbhere4u - 08-16-2013 On a diesel engine turbos don't add power! They keep things cool by lowering combustion & exhaust temperatures by leaning out the engine. so you can add more fuel. fuel adds power to a diesel But you need the extra air provided by a turbo to keep it from melting down. I added a turbo to a 240d and it maybe added maybe 3hp with 10psi of boost. Until I adjusted the injection pump then I got a little more maybe 20-25hp. But Mercedes injection pumps are pretty much maxed out stock. If you want to make more power you will need a custom injection pump built with larger elements |
