New to MB and a new project - wvshooter - 09-18-2013
Howdy, all!
I'm new to the MB diesels, but acquired a 1982 OM617 from a 300SD with 231,000 miles and light to moderate blow by.
My plan is to drop this engine into something else for an everyday driver. Initially I considered a Quad Cab 4x4 Dakota with a 5-speed manual, but I'm afraid that may be too heavy of a vehicle to get reasonable driving performance from. I don't intend to have a tire burner, just an efficient vehicle that will pass someone on the Interstate if need be.
My next thought would be a Jeep Wrangler. I know there are several of these out there, and I have spent some time on the phone with Nathan from MercedesDiesel4x4 talking about it.
Can anyone give me any real world experience with either setup and what kind of drivability and mileage to expect?

Well, the real world weight of a w123 is just over 3000lb. I have one of them and tow another 3000lb with no trouble on flat to minimal hills.
West Virginia is a bit more hilly so keep that in mind. If you have your mind on driving, a 617 turbo can reasonably keep up with traffic provided the gears aren't way off.
Gears on my 4 speed auto you'd have to search them out. I think your not way off with your plans. As you say no tire burner but, still can pass grannies and trucks crawling up grades.

You're dead on the money with the hills. I have a feeling overdrive will be useless a lot of the time. It's looking more and more like a Wrangler with an AX-15 will be the choice for me. I guess I just have to figure what gears I want. I am thinking that a 4 cyl. model will probably have gears most suited to my needs in the rears.
Should start the diesel-ectomy on the 300 come first of the week.

Gotcha. Yep that's a haul.
Did the ALDA delete make a big difference on your car? Looks like it's the same engine I'm getting ready to pull.

ALDA delete was great on one of my IP, on another it didn't do much. I heard old timers say if you don't want to delete it you can pretty well disable it by shimming a dime or nickel under that nut/collar that pulls it down onto the IP.
In my experience those have been tough nuts to crack.

Alda delete seemed to give my car more low end and make boost come sooner. Best mod I've done is turned up the IP and my IC
