caliper brackets - EmJay - 09-25-2013 What are the caliper brackets made of on the W124? Are they cast iron, or cast steel? Are they weldable or tricky like cast iron? If I were to weld onto them, would I need to throw them in an oven and let them cool down slowly over time? Working on caliper adapters for Redemption and wondering if welding was an option or if I should just stick with my gut idea and make it a bolt-on process. RE: caliper brackets - raysorenson - 09-25-2013 I identify forged vs cast by the parting line on the casting, if there is one. Cast has a small, tight parting line, forged is wide and ground flush. I think there's an oxy acetylene torch trick too. Something like cast makes a spark shower with a torch. Forged requires pre heat and slow cool down. Anything that I've needed to identify on a Merc front end ended up being forged. RE: caliper brackets - EmJay - 09-25-2013 So I should pursue the bolt option. All I needed to know RE: caliper brackets - Simpler=Better - 09-25-2013 When in doubt, preheat and cool slowly-any weld will be improved by heating even basic brackets. RE: caliper brackets - Hario' - 10-26-2013 Intuition tells me to avoid welding calipers. A friend did a caliper conversion and he fabricated caliper-hub adapter brackets from 10mm mild steel plate, IIRC he fitted OEM fitment Brembo calipers from an Evo to something European.. RE: caliper brackets - EmJay - 11-03-2013 I decided that I'm not going to weld anything to the calipers and brackets a while ago, I never did update this thread. At the moment I'm trying to figure out the best way to get the MB rotors and hubs onto my setup. Still planning a lot, and I won't act until I have a clear plan. RE: caliper brackets - Hario' - 11-18-2013 The Swedish guy who made this thread has some pics of caliper adapters he made for ML calipers onto his 190 for some inspiration. http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=sv&u=http://www.garaget.org/forum/viewtopic.php%3Fid%3D200425&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgaraget.org%2BMercedes%2B190%2B3.0%2B24v%2BTD,%2BK%25C3%2596%25C3%2596L%2BRacing%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DBRQ%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official RE: caliper brackets - EmJay - 11-21-2013 with a time and a budget crunch I'm going with the stock Mazda setup in the front. I can upgrade later if I need, but with the disc brakes in the rear versus drum brakes I might just be fine. Awesome build in that thread by the way. |
