Hi all i recently picked up my first diesel! 81 sd with no rot, very little surface rust that i am dealing with at the moment. Engine runs good and Trans seems to shift well, car came from Texas. I think the years in the hot sun took it's toll on the ol girl because she leaks. Sunroof caved in and the window seals are gone. The sunroof assembly was pretty toast so i welded it shut. Probably not the nicest way to go but it's going to be pretty custom by the time I'm done. Going to build a totally fresh interior because the seats i found were super expensive, maybe i was looking in the wrong places? Anyhow I'm planning on buying a mb back seat and some cheapo aftermarket fronts.
My next project is electrical, turn signals don't work. Going to get new fuses to start. See what happens from there. for the fun stuff, while the car is apart I want to put an intercooler on and adjust turbo and injector pump.

for the turn signal, take out the hazard switch and the column signal control, and clean out the electrical connectors. When one gets dirty it disables the whole system. I ran into that with my 86 16v. 30 minutes of work, requires the removal of the airbag and steering wheel.

You can get good used seats for like $50/pop

Buy brass and copper fuses avoid the aluminum fuses

Check the grounds from engine->body, gauge cluster-> frame, and the ones in the trunk that are under the plastic and rust out easily

When you're ready to dive in:
chain stretch
chain tensioner
valve adjustment
get your injectors balanced (member greazzer)
advance your timing to 26-28*
boost at 12-14psi
adjust or remove teh alda
adjust teh transmission vacuum and bowden cable

Add a pyrometer (auber instruments is cheapest)
pop teh rear pump cover and turn her up Smile

I had turn signals fail when my hazard light switch was halfway between on and off Wink

Thanks! I'm super pumped about this project

RE: 81 300sd from nh - Simpler=Better - 09-27-2013

the chain tensioner usually only needs a new spring ($8) and a new gasket ($5) but it's a pain to get to.

Also, look up "stretch fuel return spring" it should be 27mm (i think) that gives you some powah back.

Hey did you buy that car in Londonderry? I looks like a customers car i did a lot of work on.

RE: 81 300sd from nh - jawhip - 09-27-2013

Na up near Burlington.
That would be timing chain correct? So there is an adjuster inside, like a belt tensioner, i would pull the cover and replace the tensioner spring?

RE: 81 300sd from nh - larsalan - 09-27-2013

You'd replace the spring from the starboard side of the block up next too the chain/tensioner.
Surely someone has a diagram...
