Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - JB3 - 10-17-2013 for the past month or so ive had a body guy installing new rear quarters on my DD 240D which had some fender rust. The klokker panels are really cheap, I couldn't believe it. Here are some pics if anyone is suffering from similar rust. The cost of the panels make this kind of rust repair an actual option for people, its expensive, but lets say you have a professional weld it in and you do most of the filler and sanding work/painting or the other way around, it can be done. Ive been paying this guy though for after work friend pricing, I do not have the skills to do this. Here was the original problem- passenger fender arch- front section of arch- Other side was about the same. I ordered two new full rear quarter panels. These things were only 35 bucks apiece or so. Here are some comparison pics between stock material and what you get from klokkerholm. one was a little bent- body line looks ok compared to stock- Material is about half the thickness Body guy cut out the original panel completely. Plan is to hid the weld below the trim line area- after rebuilding the inner arch a little, he spot welded in the klokker panel. The fitting was pretty close to perfect, a little finagling to get the body line properly aligned with the door line. here are the panels in the prep stage for primer. passenger side is ready, driver side has body filler needing to be sanded down So far ive been very pleased with the klokker products. The exterior panels seem to be reasonably close to stock with some work, the floor pans and interior parts are much cruder, but make excellent patch pieces. Hopefully this car will be done this weekend and I can post a finished pic of how it turned out RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - Simpler=Better - 10-17-2013 Jesus man, that's incredible! RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - JB3 - 10-17-2013 (10-17-2013, 10:32 AM)Simpler=Better Jesus man, that's incredible! Ive been impressed with the job hes doing, major air cooled body guy. here is a closeup of the front section of the klokker panel with the fitted issue shown with an arrow. He said that body line didn't line up just right, so had to be massaged into the right position. You can also see how he cut along the existing body to door line and cut the klokker panel to meet that line, so as to preserve the factory gap. RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - JB3 - 10-23-2013 everything all finished up! looks pretty good, nice to have solid steel again and no rusted out arches. job took approximately 20 hours of labor, cost me about 800 bucks to have these two panels cut out, new ones welded in, all rot repaired in this area including fender arches and trunk floor area, and fresh matching paint RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - Simpler=Better - 10-23-2013 Unreal. That looks brand new RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - JB3 - 10-23-2013 (10-23-2013, 10:36 AM)Simpler=Better Unreal. That looks brand new yeah! at least in this specific area. It looks new enough that I forgot for a moment the passenger floor rust, and rusty door bottoms on every door, as well as the 360k worn suspension. good news is klokkerholm also sells the door bottoms as well for repairs later on, and suspension ill just get to slowly. RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - DeliveryValve - 10-23-2013 That looks great! Nice work from the body guy! (10-23-2013, 10:46 AM)JB3 [.... rusty door bottoms on every door, as well as the 360k worn suspension. I have a fairly rust free front passenger side door that I want to give away. Pay for shipping and it's yours. . RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - lgreeley83 - 10-23-2013 You still haven't taken me up on the "fix my rusty floors and maybe I give you a free beer offer" lol. Them south west folks don't know the pain of us rust belt guys. Looks great RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - sassparilla_kid - 10-23-2013 What is this "rust" thing you guys keep talking about? Pay for shipping and it's yours. Ive got 4 123 doors kicking around I ripped off a parts car. Thanks though! anyone local willing to drive up and grab it? (10-23-2013, 09:18 PM)lgreeley83 You still haven't taken me up on the "fix my rusty floors and maybe I give you a free beer offer" lol. I said you need to drive on up here! only what, 1500 miles from where you are? Or you need an enclosed landlord free space and a welder (10-23-2013, 11:34 PM)sassparilla_kid What is this "rust" thing you guys keep talking about? its when your car is far more relaxed as iron oxide powder than a stressed and uncomfortable body panel. Who wants to stay in the same position all day? RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - lgreeley83 - 10-24-2013 I gotta find an excuse to come up there. :-) how's the states economy? Lots of industry? Military bases? Hurricanes that far north? I've always thought about east coast. Might be getting a garage space in the next couple months.....woot RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - JB3 - 11-25-2013 just a follow up on this body work. I had purchased new trim buttons and with the double thick welded panel and same size hole, plus any filler, the trim buttons have a hard time keeping the molding on the car. I would specifically plan for this type of problem in the future, probably cut the back panel holes larger, so the front panel the trim button can pop in properly after they are welded together Its been a little annoying, especially if the trim was slightly tweaked on removal. Ive done some careful roadside rebending a few times so far, when the driver side rear especially popped off with wind and road vibration I may have to removed the trim, and carefully cut a chamfer on the inside edge of the holes so the buttons stay secure RE: Klokkerholm rust repair body panels - JB3 - 03-25-2014 the trim button thing is driving me nuts, I ended up having to glue it to the body and now it seems to be fine. I really messed up the trim piece going through a car wash. It had taken to popping off the fender every time I closed the drivers door, and I forgot about it before running through the wash, so it got mangled. (fortunately it was a touchless wash, but the water was bad enough) id say definitely going in, this problem needs to be under consideration before starting the repair. |
