engine colder than normal - carlitosgy6 - 10-31-2013 hi,long time no see you people,my ranger is working like a charm, oil changes and little things but reliable as it can be,but im having a little doubt about the temp of the engine, when not using the ac its seems to take some time to get waerm,on summer, with the ac on the fan is running on high but then i can see the gauge where it has to be but with no ac in 70 degrees its take too long to get on to temperature ,if its gets on to,i just removed the thermostat for testing purposes and i was surprised to find an stock Mercedes thermostat,i boiled in a pot and its opening a little at 80c but is fully open at 90c,it closes with no trouble, what can be causing my engine to work colder than normal?im going to travel to chicago on christmas so i need that motor on temp ps is a om617 turbo 1981 RE: engine colder than normal - MFSuper90 - 10-31-2013 Even though it's opening a little at 80, I'd replace it anyhow. They are only a couple dollars, and it's good peace of mind. Are you running the ranger heater core and radiator? RE: engine colder than normal - carlitosgy6 - 10-31-2013 everything is running as came from the factory, heater core has a vacuum operated valve that doesnt allow coolant flow to the core RE: engine colder than normal - MFSuper90 - 10-31-2013 Maybe the radiator and the fan flows enough that the engine isn't under enough of a load to get the engine warm. I would try putting cardboard or a feed sack in front of the radiator and see how it works then. RE: engine colder than normal - carlitosgy6 - 11-01-2013 some time ago when the truck had no ac i was using a 14 inch fan,one day i noticed that the fan wasn't working but the engine was at the right temp, but i was away from home so i drove home no trouble, but then i was so busy that i forgot that the fan wasn't working,i run that truck for months without a fan, fast speeds ,congestions any condition the motor doesn't overheat, then i got a big and powerful BMW 2 speed electric fan ,installed the ac and a fan switch set up at 190,low speed for the engine cooling high speed for the ac,the fan never kicks in with the ac off and i tested the switch,it took like 45 minutes idling to get the fan running for like a minute only RE: engine colder than normal - willbhere4u - 11-01-2013 Diesel engines tend to run cooler than gas engines. up to 50% less heat energy is lost to the cooling system. RE: engine colder than normal - carlitosgy6 - 11-01-2013 that have sense,i ordered a new thermostat not because the old one was bad, just because is cheap, thanks for everything people |
