what to do? - TurboTim - 02-18-2014

Help me make this decision. Currently I have an 87 300 SDL. I got this car for basically $160 because I put a $100 trans in an A4 and a $60 diff in a blazer for trade for this Mercedes. It needed some work but it runs and drives good now and has no rust at all but the interior is shot and there is a dent along 1 door. It also has 230k miles. I just found a 76 mercedes 300d on Craigslist for $1000 that supposedly on has 39k actual miles but doesnt run. So here is my delema... do I swap the drive train for my 87 into the 76? Sell the 87 get money to buy a 24v motor for the 76? Keep them both? Though keep in mind I also have a CL65 as a summer car. A compound turbo Volvo V70R as my super fun winter beater and summer beater and a 81 volvo 240 with a Turbo LS1 as my super fast car. I also have an 11 second Eagle Talon and a bobbed Deuce and a half. So thats why I am wondering what I should do with the 300SDL. I kinda want the older Benz for the cool old car factor. Which is why I liked the 300SDL in the first place. How do these older Mercs drive and run? I have never owned a car this old so I am a little worried about the ride. Should I keep both cars and sell the SDL when I find the right buyer? I am hesitant about cutting it up because its no rust. Oh and will a 6cyl fit in that 76 300d

om606, PG, and 36" slicks will make you a cool 10sek car =)

So cut it up is my advice...

You have cooler cars to cruise.

RE: what to do? - TurboTim - 02-18-2014

I like these benz though for MPG, road trips and cruisin town so losing a back seat to tubbing is out of the question and I really only want to keep one benz also. Though that is a great idea and would love it but I think 2 tubbed cars is too much.

RE: what to do? - TurboTim - 02-18-2014

Really? No one has any insite?

Is it possible to swap a 6cyl into the 76? Does anyone know this?

RE: what to do? - Simpler=Better - 02-19-2014

You would probably have to hack things up a little to fit into the 76, I want to say the oil filter need relocation and turbos can get too close to the shock towers...

RE: what to do? - F.R.A.S - 02-19-2014

Do a 100% stock car with some modern twists.

First ain't 300SD a 5cyl engine? You write that you wounder if the -76 will accommodate the 6cyl engine. Or we are speaking w124 300 here and the om603?

If it's the 603 engine, that's super. Just put a good manifold on that and a hy35 turbo and do a 6mm swap in the IP. Then you'll get at good running car that can do a million miles on the gallon and still have a strong fell while pushing the throttle.

Make some good sound proofing of the chassis and fit some handling stuff and brakes on the car and you'll have a super cool cruiser.

w126 300SDL is om603.962 turbo 86 and 87 in the US

RE: what to do? - TurboTim - 02-19-2014

Yeah I have been thinking and I think this car is just too nice to cut up unless you can hell me alot of suspension and brake stuff would work but I am guessing not and yes mine is the US 6 cylinder. How nice do this W115's ride? Are they okay for long distance?

RE: what to do? - willbhere4u - 02-19-2014

The w115 is ok. But the w126 300sdl is a great and comfortable car and the interiors are easy to get and replace any w126 1981-1992 will work except the rear door panels and carpet are special to the L models like the 300sdl 420sel or 560sel I got low mile seats out of a 560sel at the pick and pull yard for cheap for my car. w126 parts are cheap and plentiful. w115 are getting rare

RE: what to do? - F.R.A.S - 02-19-2014

A 200whp daily cruiser like this maybe.

Minus the rims, those are hideous

RE: what to do? - TurboTim - 02-21-2014

I have been thinking more. Im having trouble wanting to get rid of the SDL because yes it is comfortable it drives great but I do also want this new one so I think to make it work I thought of this great idea of using them as loaner cars for my good customers for my repair shop and just giving them out to the good customers. I know this is going to be hard because you get emotionally attached to cars and I have already put some nicer wheels on my SDL and lowered it. I also put an ebay special T3/T4 turbo on the stock manifold so it sounds cool. Trying to learn more about the injection pump before I crank that up. I figure having two old benz will be a cool marketing thing for our already cool shop. This way I can keep them both and have the shop pay for that super upgaded injector pump. Now I will just have to keep customers from filling them with gas!

Seriously, that's a terrible plan. You're loaning out a car to people who can't fix their own cars, expecting them to not destroy it?

If you loan out a diesel to a non diesel head, expect to get a call when they blow it up. Shops have cheap minivans as loaners for a reason.

RE: what to do? - TurboTim - 02-21-2014

Check out our shop though (TurboTims.com) we do things a little better though then the average minivan loaner car shop and I would only be loaning this out to the customers who wanted it and would enjoy it. Plus I dont thing the average person is as hard on my cars as I am. Our "other" customers get the Camrys.

RE: what to do? - TurboTim - 02-24-2014

I ended up getting the 76 and it ran so good that I decided I couldnt pull the motor. So I guess more money to mod the SDL.

RE: what to do? - willbhere4u - 02-25-2014

I like the 300SDL it's cheap to work on I just picked up an aluminum hood and trunk lid. Off of an older 300sd for mine at the pick and pull yard for under $100 last week end. In the past I picked up euro headlights and bumpers. i have an om606.962 out of a 1998 e300d to swap in with a 6spd manual out of a c230 kompressor. hopefully this summer

RE: what to do? - TurboTim - 02-25-2014

Yeah I decided to build my SDL also. How hard is that 6 speed swap?

RE: what to do? - willbhere4u - 02-26-2014

Well the 6spd transmission bolts right up to the om603 or om606 The tricky part is the fly wheel and clutch. The 6spd was designed for a duel mass clutch and is set up with the bearing in the flywheel so the input shaft on the transmission is shorter. So I ordered a single mass flywheel conversion kit and clutch from England for a 2.2CDI sprinter it's a single mass flywheel with 9.5 inch disc with the pilot bearing in the flywheel the kit was reasonable but the shipping was a lot. It weighs over 50# complete. as for the rest of the conversion I'm not sure yet I did find an original w126 manual transmission pedal set. Although the w123 pedal set can be modified to work also.

I will have to fab up a cross member and drive shaft and possibly shorten or lengthen the shifter to work but I haven't gotten that far yet.
