Ideal diff ratio - Eric78 - 02-23-2014 So what would be the ideal range of diff ratios for a OM605 w201 Super turbo with a 722.636 trans? RE: Ideal diff ratio - whipplem104 - 02-23-2014 It depends a little on which transmission you are using the a330 or a580. They have different 1st and 2nd gear ratios. But mostly it depends on how much torque you are making. Slow revving, low rpm and high torque I would not go above a 3.06 gear in the differential. It starts to make the lower gears to short. I have 2.24 gears in one of my cars right now that has around 400+ lb/ft of torque at the wheels. It will still light the tires off and go high 12.-- in the quarter mile only using 1st and 2nd. RE: Ideal diff ratio - swampmonkey - 02-23-2014 and depending on what you are going to use it for... 2.47 and fivespeed is a tad to low for tracks, but works for driving normal.... 3.07/2.88 is imo ideal for normal driving with fivespeed, 2.65 with automatic... althou i also have a w126SEC with om605 turbo and 2.47 fivespeed that runs great as a daily.... what are you going to use it for? Daily driver mostly, maybe some track, looking at getting 350+hp from the engine. RE: Ideal diff ratio - swampmonkey - 02-24-2014 in that case i would go for something along 2.6- 2.8 RE: Ideal diff ratio - Eric78 - 02-24-2014 (02-24-2014, 04:32 AM)swampmonkey in that case i would go for something along 2.6- 2.8 I've got a 2.65 ASD in my watchlist on ebay, can an ASD from a w124 handle the power? RE: Ideal diff ratio - swampmonkey - 02-24-2014 (02-24-2014, 04:35 AM)Eric78(02-24-2014, 04:32 AM)swampmonkey in that case i would go for something along 2.6- 2.8 uncertain if the ASD will manage that power, im not exactly experienced with the ASD part of the w124 diffs... here is another guy that has done the swap from w124 to w201... ask him/them how it has worked out.... http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/Thread-W201-and-W124-ASD-diff-swaps as with everything, the durability probably depends on how much stress it has to endure the gearing should probably survive if proper oil is there, a w123 3.69welded survived a om606 530hp without problem, so yeah.... the stuff that will probably break earlier is the driveshafts if they are rusty... |
