Picked up a 1992 W124 200D with an OM602.
The drive shaft came loose and wacked the auto transmission breaking the tail housing.
Engine runs great and interior is like new, so...
Thinking of putting in a 5 speed manual and see lots of different 5 speeds for sale on eBay UK and elsewhere.
Did a quick search and saw lots of threads, but didn't find anything specific. Am thinking this is not new ground.
Will need a flywheel, clutch, 5 speed manual transmission, petal assembly for clutch master, slave cyl and lines/hose, shifter and linkage, and spedo hook up somehow.
I know the 190 sedans had 5 speeds as well and other models.
Any tips as to what to look for and how to find it?.

190 has all parts except driveshaft, same layout.

get the flywheel with the transmission, some transmissions is for a single-mass flywheel, for example 717.430 and 717.411 and some mated with a dualmass 717.433 and 717.413 for example...

a dual mass while give you a smoother driving/starting, if the flywheel is healthy and not starting to fall apart...

other than that you want a clutch that will survive the torque of a diesel, if you get gearbox+clutch+flywheel from a diesel om602 or something beefier you could be certain that it wont slip/wear out as fast as from a 200 gasser... (if you have those in the US)
you probably have a nice high-geared differential mated to that automatic transmission, i would leave it there
low nice rpm while highway cruicing i dont know how it is in US regarding second-hand market of carparts, but perhaps one option would be to get a rusty dented w124 om602 with a good engine and, steal both driveline+goodies from the engine before moving it to a junkyard? option to testdrive gearbox and spares for your car as springs, alternator, starter, and injectors, doorstops and whatnot...?

Rear end is a little tall for overdrive, I had 2.65 way too tall, 2.86 I believe now, in a 190 it is great around town and at 75+ mph, hard to get into overdrive before 70. In a heavier w124 5 cylinder 3.07 would probably be a good balance point, unless you drive 80mph all the time.

You're in luck, I have a 190d 2.5 NA 5 speed manual gearbox and flywheel lying around. I may have the clutch and shifter + linkages but I'm not sure.
I've also got the speedo cable. The diff is also available, I'm not sure what ratio it is but it's correct for the gearbox.
