2.88 or 3.06? - Purplecomputer - 05-24-2014
I have been wanting to upgrade my rear differential but I am not sure which one would be best for my setup since I can only really do this once.
I have to 616 Turbo and right now I have a 3.96 (dont know if the numbers are right)
going 70's is about as fast as I can go right now without having the whole car sound like its about to explode, plus It just dosnt ride well, if you guys know what I mean......Its hard to explain.
I know Ill need the tach as well.

i have a 3.07 on my non turbo 240d om616 with 72hp. works good... isnt that much of a difference between 2.88 and 3.06, go for whatever is cheapest/best.
3.06 probably has the large yoke/flange, while some 3.07 have the smaller one, the one from300sd w116/w126 and 300dt w123
is it an original 240d you should have 3.69 today, if its an 220d it should be 3.92.

no problem with the number-dyslexic, aslong as i can guess what you mean i wont mind, ill leave the angerissues to others
if the 3.07 is easy to find id go for that, i gain about 100rpm doing 65mph on the car with the 2.88 vs the other with 3.07, althou that is with fivespeed gearboxes....
running the Gearspeed calculator app it gave me 62mph vs 58mph with the fourth gear (1:1) and 2.88 vs 3.07
so with a 2.88 your car will do 62mph when reving 2500rpm
and with a 3.07 your car will do 58mph when reving 2500rpm
the 2.88 is like only the last year of w123turbodiesel and the w126 from the same year, 1985 or perhaps 1984 also. but id bet my money on a 1985 turbodiesel... not exactly common,
But you can be happy you live in the US and not over here in Europe, we never got that 2.88 at al, i have imported mine throu a guy named Garret in Sacramento, he is the best!

I think I have a 3.07 from an '84 300SD that should bolt up to your car. Shipping a diff isn't too bad, I've done it with a 2.88 before. If you're interested shoot me a PM.

I vote for 3.07. You wont have enough torque to get out of the hole on a 2.88. I had to struggle with my 617 2.88 getting out of the parking garage. (this is assuming you have 4spd manual)

you can go up hills without a problem, if doing about 55mph, i can do any hill that we have on the highway in sweden, without loosing any speed, on a non turbo om616...
althou, that depends on where you live, i often look for the fifth gear on my 240d, the same with the turboed om617 w115 fourspeed with 2.65, where the frack is my fifth gear. has about 90hp.

the only difference is that you will have to drive with a gear lower compared to stock 3.69 if it is realy steep, like, someplaces i use 2nd instead of third, third only worked with high speed earlier and aggresive driving 3.69, and doesnt work at al now with 3.07, nothing that matters at al realy. not that hard to downshift.
the acctual difference in a 2.88 vs 3.07 is realy freaking smal, like, you are doing 2000rpm the car will do 21km/h instead of 19km/h... not realy that much..
have a w126sec with the 2.47 om605 fivespeed, and yes, you have to be a tad more careful with the clutch,
the first gear is painfully slow stock with the 3.69 differential, as long as it is flat or a little downhill you can start in second gear
the 3.07 is probably easier to find, and came in more years, but Greazzer is driving his heavy car with a 2.65LSD and a fivespeed paired to a om617NA.. and doesnt seem to troubled.

Sounds good. Ill save up for a 3.07 and new speedo. Quick question. Am i able to swap the mile counter thing-a-majig (whats that called?) into the new one. I wanna keep track of the miles.

My '81 300TD will be crushed soon and the 3.07 rear isn't spoken for. If you pull it you can have it super cheap. It has 195k on the "odometer".
The gauge cluster uses an electronic speedo which I don't want to seperate from the trans. They happen to be available too though, so...

i have 2.88 and a manual with 617 and it took getting the ALDA and boost sorted out before i could go up hills. after that it was easy and i appreciate the extra top end.

Speaking of 2.88, my buddy just bought a super clean '85 w126. That should be a 2.88, right?
