So im getting my money soon for the car and I really want to pick up a golf TDI (Mk4) with a 5 speed.
Ive found a few good ones but I figured I would ask here if you guys know of anyone selling one or have seen one in the area.

My dad has a 203 golf 6 speed.
Ive had TDI's in the past and even though they have electrical issues (Ive experienced them first hand)
they are great cars, plus with all the traveling I do, I cant see myself not using a diesel engine like the TDI
I know simpler really wants me to get a ford ranger, sorry!

In my opinion, If you want reliability with great economy, than you want the 2003 Golf with the ALH coded engine and Bosch VE injection pump. I say this because the mk4 has been in production for about 4 years to work out the kinks and it's the last year of the of the ALH engine.
The 2004-2005 Golfs got the Pump Duse BEW engine code. I like the PD motors, but they require 505.01 VW spec specific oil, may have cam issues and may have very cold winter hard starts. But once you get that sorted out, I think they are great motors. But it does cost money and may not for everyone.
Incidentally, regarding the 2014, what out for hot shut down during the regeneration process. This will cook your turbo. If you do a search, you'll see many turbo failures before 100k mikes.

Don't get a 2.slow they're shit. I've been elbows deep in a buddy's, easy to work on but always having issues. 70k miles ate oil like a mofo.

friend of mine has a 2002 jetta tdi, just about 220k on it now. you stay on top of timing belt changes and intake filling up with carbon, they are pretty reliable.
he drives the heck out of his, loves the car.
couple years ago his stock automatic was crapping out so he had a european 6 speed manual shipped over for about 2500 bucks and we installed it. got it off some contact on fredstdi page.

i think they are mechanically identical and just have some different body panels apart from the hatch/trunk difference. i saw a jetta once with a golf front end on it, very interesting look. golf with a trunk.
anything you can do to a jetta tdi you can do to golf tdi seems to me.
over on vwvortex there is a thread (once you wade through all the 16 year old kid hellaflush bullshit) where a dude swapped in a 1.9 tdi into a mk2 golf.
was completely awesome, i think he was getting plus 10 to 15 mpg in the much lighter body

The 2012 and newer Passat TDI exhaust have a catalyst called a diesel particulate filter. Once this filter gets clogged with soot at a certain point, the car's computer calls for a regeneration to burn the soot to clean out the DPF.

In the newer Passat, the regeneration could make catalyst temperatures spike up to 1200° F. If you shut down the engine while the DPF is cooking, it takes a long time for it too cool and you effectively cook your turbo also because of lack lubrication cooling.
Basically if you are not personally in tuned with the car on when the regen occurs, it probably best to have an EGT gauge installed. You'll know then when it is happening. The little money spent today on a gauge could help in not spending a lot of money on a turbo when the warranty runs out.

It's suppose to lower emissions on the cars. Every new diesel has it, and pretty much is forced to have it to comply with emission laws.
I hate it, it's terrible for an engine.

DPFs - well communism also works in theory
. It is supposed to collect carbon particles (soot) and when it's full a really late post injection raises EGTs to oxidize the carbon into CO2.The problem is ash from burning oil is also collected and cannot be burned off.So it clogs the filter after 100K miles or so.Then it has to be cleaned or replaced. You can also remove it but you have to reprogram the ECU so it doesn't throw any codes.

Thy can be removed and cooked in a professional oven(big truck shops have them) to get rid of oil redisue, contamination, etc.
The system is fine for long hauls, but short in-town trips don't do so well. I imagine it would be good (engine wise) ot have a bypass for short trips

my wife begged me to get rid of it, i had an 86. great economy, easy to repair, and i love the way they look, (also mk1), but they are like comparing a beer can to a keg in solidity comparison to your 240. light duty, loud, and fragile.
most people id say hell yeah, but youve been in so many accidents maybe you should stay away from the early vws or anything that will fold up like a house of cards when the next one comes.
personally id buy something cheap, relatively recent but pre airbags so you dont have to replace them, and incredibly common since you will probably be needing to hit the yards for fenders and bumpers a few times.

so far the two cars I was interested in, one was overpriced and shit the other sold in like 5 seconds before I could go see it.
So now Im going to go see a 97 jetta tdi, my dads friend owned it. He wants 1.5K for it. The only issue is it has been sitting for three years in his backyard.
also 1.5k is book value for this car in good condition. Ive already been told it will need new brakes and tires and some "Love"

i bought a 1999 bug tdi alh with 185k on it for 1500 and now im in the middle of an engine swap do to worn out cylinder boars make sure if you get an ALH turbo that it has always been run on VW approved synthetic oil.

60mpg in that little death trap actually is pretty terrible. ALH volkswagons have been reported on getting 50-60mpg average when well taken care of and low rolling resistance tires etc etc.

Now, at 156,000 miles, we have spent $200 on repairs. The clutch is still original, and although I experience some chatter when cold every month or so, it's holding up well.
I've been getting 38-40 MPG all this summer. I got 38 on this last tank, doing 65% highway at 70-80 MPH, 20% 40 MPH back roads (in fifth), and 15% city/stop-&-go traffic.
I would say that the major plusses and minuses on the car are these:
Plusses:
1) Awesome gas mileage
2) Comfortable (for it's class, it's not a W140 or anything :p)
3) Roomy trunk (about as much room as a W123, plus the seats fold down)
4) Extremely reliable/durable
5) Easy to work on
6) Very gentle and forgiving clutch
7) Very good fit-&-finish all around
Minuses:
1) Noisy on the highway -- hits 2K RPM at 55 MPH
2) Don't get t-boned by any sort of SUV (although this is probably also the case for most other sedans without side airbags)
3) Kind of a boring, heavy shifter, although I've never missed a shift because of it
I think it's safe to say that I like our Corolla sa much as Simpler likes his Ranger.

I just got the new TDI engine back in my 99 bug this weekend with a light weight flywheel new clutch / timing belt. almost every bolt on the engine is torque to yield one time use bolts I spent $80 just in the motor mounts and timing belt bolts to put it in there. Make sure if you get a TDI to disconnect the EGR. The intake on the new engine with around 100k was 50% plugged up with oily carbon exhaust deposits. I'm pretty sure it failed because of non synthetic oil and a bad EGR control valve that was stuck open causing the rings to stick and wear the cylinder block. Now the engine has no cat or egr to screw it up.

It pretty much has everything done to it already.
Nice wheels, lowered a little bit. Brakes and shit. New tires and what not.
Interior needs a little love.
Turn signals didnt work but I fixed that today with a new hazard switch. Seems as if the relay for that is built into that thing. $10 part, 10 minutes of labor.
THIS SHIT IS FAAAAAST. 5sp too.
one major thing for me though. Who ever installed the radio had no idea what a wire harness was. They got rid of the stock one and just soldered into the cut cables
also the radio is shit. Its one of those single din folding screen ones and of course the motor went out so it dosnt move.
no big deal. I was planning on getting a double din monitor and hooking that up to a raspberry pie. load a bluetooth chip and tether my phone. Install some sort of linux distro/android and use my phone for data
EDIT: apparently android on the raspberrry pi sucks, so Ill have to think of something else. Most likely a linux distro

So I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to do with the stereo.
for some reason people have just been giving me their old units when I tell them I am shopping for one. Almost bought a $300 unit but then decided against it.
I think I am going to try to repair the one that came with the car. The pioneer AVIC-N1
its a single din with a pull out screen, ya know...the motorized ones. The thing just got stuck. I took it apart. I have to test the motors and the flex cable from the board to screen is cracked. I think Ill just used some old floppy cable and solder that directly into the boards.
I also bought new shocks. Bilsteins b4 touring sport editions.
oh and a new shift knob.
Ill have to go to the junkyard to find a stock air cleaner box, the under the radio console piece.
so far just trying to clean it up. its very dirty and gross. The PO was a mechanic by trade so the car is just covered in oil and shit.
but that's what you get for 2,800
Still not sure what I want to do with the merc. 1,000 to just straighten it out is very tempting.
