Problem with Shaft length [716.6XX + 320 E Differential] - swatmugga - 08-25-2014

Hi!

I have a W124 300D Turbo with 716.6XX gearbox.

Until today i used the differential from 300D (non Turbo) with front shaft of the W210 (84cm long) and rear shaft from 300D (non Turbo) (96cm long)

Today i wanted to build in the 320E Differential because it has a longer transmission and is more robust.

The big differential is about 3cm longer than the 300D one. So my shafts are to long!

I also have the rear shaft from 320E here but its to short it only 89cm long.
Is there any shaft i can use with about 93 cm?

e 320 diff why? u fear to brake the 300d diff ? or is a question of gears?

The 300D diff has a lot of play. Its trans. 1:3,7

The 320 diff is in very good condition and is trans. 1:3,07 a lot better.
I realy hope there is a shaft what will fit on my setup...I just bought it.

I like to get around 300 HP from my engine so there should be a robust differential.

Do you think the middle differential with 90mm connection will hold the power?
The 320E has 110mm

I think, this merc diff will hold enough power.
having play does not mean nothing, the bearings are the issue, when they start to sing, u can change them, probably is cheaper.
I made a mod in my 124, but i got a diff from a w124 300td, 3 point fixing big case with gear ratio of 2.87.
2.87 is a good ratio, i had to swap wheel transmission (axels) and the power transmission, actually i cut and welded mine(now it vibrates i haven´t balanced it), but i´ve been in a junk yard and there is a lot of sises that fit the 124.
another issue is the rubber dumping plate which comes in dif sizes as well.
Once u have the so desired 300HP, maybe your clutch and gear box will be the weakest part.
I´m after 300HP in a 605, now i´m at 150 Sad, in future it will be more agressive.
regards

I don't think the 90mm flex disc is a good idea! Especially not with long gearing. Even the stock turbo has got a 110mm flex disc...

I had my prop shaft shortened, remanufactured (uni-joint) and balanced. Cost was about 220€ - not much, considering you get a fitting "as good as new" prop shaft. No vibration, no droning - it's worth it!

I would have to take a measurement, but could your 320 rear shaft be from a Coupé? Where are you from?

Hi barrote!

The with the 716 Gearbox and 220CDI clutch the Power shoulnd be the Problem.

The Play in the differential is very annoying... Its not fun to drive that.

I will try to find a fittin shaft.... If it dont work im going to buy a middle diff like you.

@Dieselweasel im from germany! I dont know where is my actually shaft from.

I just noticed that my differential has a 100mm fex disk!

Is there any Shaft that now could fit? I think about 250D and 300D Turbo shafts.
