hey there!
got a 717.401 that i destroyed, and now sourced two new, one from another car i have, and the other i bought.
feeling on the axle that goes into the gearbox at the front, al three of them had quite a lot of play, is this a problem, and something i should fix before driving much?
third gear gave up one the first gearbox, but ran excellent for a long-long time!
(if i absolutely should change the bearing, how much work would it be, doable?

I've got a .404 that I just went into for that reason.
Replacing the front bearing and the needle bearing between the 2 main shafts cut about half the play out of it. The front bearing was probably the one causing most of the play, and on a 404 it can be serviced by just removing the front cover in the bellhousing. A special tool was required for removal. Installation without the specified mandrel was difficult but possible.
Also, I think it's a good idea to just stack 2 pilot bearings against each other if you don't have the spacer that locates the pilot. I suspect I pushed my pilot too far into the crank during trans installation. This would seriously shorten the longevity and torque capability of the trans.

how much play did you have after servicing it? in mm, barely noticable at al, 2-3mm longest out, or something else? want to know "how much" is normal play

with pilot bearing you are talking about the one in the flywheel, right? seems logical that missing that would affect torque capability

It's in the crank if you have a singlemass trans. There is a spacer that goes in the crank to locate the pilot. Turbodiesels, being originally equipped with auto's, did not have this spacer. Not using this spacer runs the risk of pushing the pilot too far into the crank while installing the trans. Stacking 2 pilots makes a cheap and readily available spacer.

After bearing replacement. It was an improvement but I didn't measure before replacing bearings.
