max boost N/a om617 - anths - 04-02-2015

Hello ,
what would be the maximum boost you could force into a N/a Om617 , I am in the middle of converting my engine and have a external gate with a 18psi spring which I'm considering maybe too much..?

Any help or advice appreciated

 Cheers Anthony

More boost, more better! 18 psi will keep you safe. Diesels are not like gas. It's more fuel that will kill it, not more boost

can´t agree any more!!! 1.5 BAR is a interesting nr for those engines, be aware that u may have oveheating problems that u can´t see directly,
some people say that 617´s dont have oil cooling at piston crown. so be aware

I did read somewhere that 20 psi was the limit for a factory turbo head running stock springs, I have upgraded my springs and cam but I am still not sure...?

thats not the main issue, actually the head assy is not of any concern, unless u intend to run 3/4 BAR inlet press. Reason the head gasket will blow first and the head assy is in a water bath so u´ll see temp increase. if the valves start to float, u´ll see power outbreak, and they wont touch the pistons.
pistons although are of concern, in that engine!! engine crown temp can only be measured indirectly through EGT. or through engine oil temp, but as i said if the piston crown is not cooled by engine oil, that does not work.
as of my experience , 500ºC continuous EGT, 650ºC peak, oil temp below 100ºC should be reliable. that should give u 300HP before anything breaks apart, of course with the right periferals.

Thanks for the advice,
It wont see 3 or 4 bar, Im running the std "mw" pump and was going to use a spare wastegate with internal spring of 18psi, Im not after 300hp I would be happy doubling stock N/a hp which is 80hp so 140+ would be great.

Thanks again I will finish my manifold and see what happens Smile keeping an eye on egt.

Cheers Anthony

2 bar / 30psi seems to be the general consensus for the max boost the factory turbo engines can handle.

The stock NA engine is anyone's guess, some people imply your NA engine will explode at the mere thought of a turbo bolted on.

However these guys run 2.1 bar in a formerly NA engine so...

Personally I wouldn't expect it to keep together at that amount of boost, but 18 psi plus EGT monitoring would be ok at a guess.

RE: max boost N/a om617 - barrote - 04-03-2015

lol, they hold 3BAR before the head assy flyes away , belive me. any engine will hold that unless u mess a lot with fueling and chamber size.
2 BAR for such a engine, well i assume is a lot considering that the valve system is not prepared for intake positive pressure, may lead to severe oil loss. piston crown overheating wich when it screams is too late. head gasket wich is not the same as turbo one, may leak causing cooler overheating,
but this is basic tunining issues encountrs, thats why we discuss in forums.
Ants throw your MW in the bin, aquire a M install dieselmeken elements, tune it to 90cc fuel, install a I/C a turbo from a 220CDI or 270CDI,
run 2 bar boost and u can achieve 250HP on that prehistoric engine.
Wink
if u were closer i could search a pump for u.

Thankyou very much , for all the information I will start my own thread of the build.

cheers Anthony

Hi there,
Just checked , I have a spare IP pump and it's a M also have the injector lines to suit

Cheers Anthony

u see, now u just need the elements and a person to swap them, and tune the governor.... the tricjy part, but all can be done...
luck
