Stupid Question regarding transmissions - Pomidori - 04-08-2015

Ok, so I understand that throwing a 617 into a 240D body requires modifying 3/4's (major components)  of the drive train to accommodate the extra length of the engine. That's fine. What I wonder is, does the auto and manual trans differ in lengths as well? Wouldn't it be easier to mount a 4spd into a 300d body (since all of them are auto)? Wouldn't that only require modifying 1/4 of the drive train? I assume this is only if the trans lengths are the same. Probably an easy question to answer, this has been bothering me for some time.

The auto transmission is noticeably longer

Could I just switch the halfshafts as they are in the picture? A balance would be in order too I suppose. Maybe there is no other way around cutting the driveshaft.
