No wastegate - Matej - 05-29-2015 Hello, Is anyone on here running their Superturbodiesel without a wastegate, or with their wastegate permanently closed? I know Cummins truck people do it and state the motor will only limit itself to as much boost as it can handle, but I am curious how dangerous this method is for spirited driving with a Superpump. It seems that it should be fine as long as the turbo is decently sized and fueling is adjusted to a safe amount, however I would love to hear first-hand experiences if anyone has them. Cheers. RE: No wastegate - Booster - 05-29-2015 I have no super pump, but electronic pump with resistor mod and holset h1c turbo. No issues as the pump can't produce enough fuel to produce dangerous levels of boost..... I doubt the turbo could even produce that much anyway... Its all going to depend what pump and what turbo combo.... RE: No wastegate - MFSuper90 - 05-29-2015 Booster is right. A stock om606 turbo with no waste gate is asking for trouble because the exhaust is so restricted. Excessive back pressure = blown head Gasket or worse But. Hx60 on a om617 with no waste gate would never be a problem because the om617 would never spool a hx60 hard enough to hurt anything. It depends on your combo RE: No wastegate - TurboTim - 05-30-2015 I ran an hx40/35 with no waste gate on my 606 and managed almost 3 bar with 55psi back pressure. I think that was with maybe 170cc fuel. RE: No wastegate - barrote - 05-30-2015 that should be a problema, is not wich will kill your engine. u can weld the waste gate closed and u´ll se what will kill your engine is the EGT. back pressure will strugle your engine, and no harm will come from that, but if u have enough fuel lets say 100cc, during a Hill climb u´ll see a enormous raise in EGT´s and coolant temp , and finally engine destruction. I removed my wastegate as it served NO purpose, my pump can't produce enough fuel at the moment to worry about anything. Back pressure / EGT / etc etc EGT'S currently never go above 400 c with resistor mod plus holset h1c When I get big pump I'll sort a good manifold + wastegate Drives perfect as it is now. Like I said at first it depends what pump/turbo combo you have RE: No wastegate - DiseaselWeasel - 05-30-2015 Runing no means of boost control is not as uncommon as it may sound RE: No wastegate - MFSuper90 - 05-30-2015 (05-30-2015, 03:43 PM)DiseaselWeasel Runing no means of boost control is not as uncommon as it may sound It is actually the normal on older tractors engines, generator sets, and combine engines RE: No wastegate - Matej - 05-30-2015 The plan is an OM606 with a 7mm pump and HX35. I guess I will see how high the temperature climbs. RE: No wastegate - TurboTim - 05-30-2015 Big turbo is my wastegate! Best way to relieve back pressure. RE: No wastegate - Edian727 - 05-30-2015 My old ford 6.9 with the old banks kit was like that. turbo was to small for the top end, if you held wot on a hill you could easily get your egts to high, or overheat. mine blew a hg, probably because i pushed it real hard. the old 7600(ford tractor) i used to run was like this too, but it only ran 2600 rpms and didn't choke out like the 6.9. i imagine 3+k it'd choke though. seen a few compounds with no gate on the second. One guy said he'd tune the second turbo in with the exhaust housing. makes sense. personally i like the turbo coming in pretty quick witch makes using no wastegate a problem. unless you got a vgt or vnt, but i dont know much about those as i've never seen one in the junkyards, and i don't really buy new things. |
