High EGTs kill - Torkey - 09-14-2015

Had a race this weekend and in the process blew a boost hose.  The driver noticed on the front straight that the EGT gauge was pegged at 1600 degrees.  Took out the turbo.  Here are some pictures for those that like looking at failure porn.  My space os limited here but there are more pictures on our Facebook page if you want to see all the gory details.

In tractor pulling and many other diesel sports as well (I guess anything boosted) we weld tabs to each pipe and bolt them so they can't escape one another. Most times the boots don't blow, but rather the tubes seperate from the force and cause the boot to blow off.

Fortunately, it was a cheap Ebay turbo.  Could have been so much worse if we had a proper name brand turbo. :-)  I would hurt to only get 9 hours out of that.

Which Ebay turbo was it btw? Just curious due to the other thread about them.

It was an F-Diesel brand.  I really don't think it was the turbos fault though.  Something like this would kill any turbo.

Do you use a worked pump yet?

I'm using a stock MW pump that I have turned up. We weren't running that much boost, only 25 lbs. The coupler blew because it had another clamp rubbing against it.

Pulled out the turbo cartridge and found an artifact from the meltdown.  A small ball of metal the used to be the turbine wheel.

The solution to high egts is usually more booist afaik. Where were they running before the blowout?
