OM 648 Oil Pan and Oil Pump - zeeman - 10-25-2015 Some of us have been looking for a OM 648 oil pan and oil pump for some 4x4 conversions. I have found a few used for upwards of $600.00 and are getting almost impossible to find in the USA. I have done some internet surfing and have found the parts new, price doesn't seem bad for Mercedes OEM. Oil Pan 648 014 03 02 $393.00 Oil Pump 648 180 03 01 $456.00 I guarantee is saves a $1,000 worth of grief. Just did a Jeep JK with the OM 648 pan and oil pump, it wouldn't have happened with the OM 606 pan. RE: OM 648 Oil Pan and Oil Pump - ho55 - 10-27-2015 Well if you have that money go for it, but i found my sump & pump quite easily for around $50 each. There is such things as international shipping you know. Look on ebay.de there are more parts available that .com or others. RE: OM 648 Oil Pan and Oil Pump - 50harleyrider - 10-27-2015 I'm starting to pull the 606.962 out of the donor car so I can finally get measurements for my F150 4 x 4 swap. I noticed some OEM .648 pumps and pans available as well as dipsticks when I google the oem part numbers. I guess that just leaves the pickup tube, the main cap fasteners and oil pan bolts to complete the pan swap? I really want to keep the engine as low as possible in the swap so I won't have to lift the truck. Thanks for keeping us up on it Zeeman. If you see a possibility of a group buy, let me know. The bolts can be bought after market, but the pick up tube will be a dealer item. Even with the Om 648 pan on the JK we still had to do a 4" lift. The differential still was to close to the pan. I think my next one I am just going with a dry sump, will save a lot of headache. Cost would be about a wash, abundant used ones on E-bay. RE: OM 648 Oil Pan and Oil Pump - 50harleyrider - 10-27-2015 A dry sump would be awesome. What would we look for on ebay? Would you have to mod a stock pan to get rid of the sump and just plumb from the remote tank to the stock pump through a boss in the pan? How would you scavenge oil back to the remote tank? From what I understand a 5 stage pump would be the best for the long inline pan. Three pickups and two pressure outlets. I think a 3 gallon tank would be enough. As far as the pan either modify the stock pan or make a aluminum adapter ring to bolt on the block and use a after market dry sum pan that's flat. A dry sump would have a lot of advantages in a 4x4,with doing extreme angles as well as pulling a vacuum from the crankcase increasing HP. www.reher.morrison.com Tech talk #21 has some great info on dry sumps. RE: OM 648 Oil Pan and Oil Pump - 50harleyrider - 10-29-2015 This website won't come up www.reher.morrison.com If we were dealing with small block Chevy, would definitely be doable although still several grand. I wonder if any of the European drifters have tried a dry sump on an OM 606? Might be a good question for dieselmeken. I think shopping on e-bay you could come up with a system for a $1,000. As for the pan just cutting the sump down should work. The pumps have several 'stages', which are separate pumps, so some draw oil from the 'sump' and feed it into a de-aerating tank, and the other 'stages' draw de-aerated oil from the tank and feed it into the block gallery. If you buy the external pump and fabricate the rest of the system then it would be reasonably cheap, as far as materials are concerned, probably come up with a oil filter housing that lets you pump the oil back into the block gallery at that point, save going back into the sump and up to the OEM oil pump location. Adding a geared pulley to the crank nose is probably the most complex part IMHO. |
