Engine choices - Mognut - 11-10-2015 Hello peeps This is my first post I have a Unimog I've been playing with for many years I've moved the front axle forward by 350 mm to improve stability when off-roadies. it's a u600421 fitted with an om 616 that I fitted years ago I'd like a little more power and a sump mounted to the rear for clearance to the axle. I really don't want to go bigger due to the weight over the front as Unimog have a bad habit of lifting the rear axle when going down steep banks. Basically I'm asking if there is a four cylinder with a rear sump that has the same bell housing patern as the OM 616. Many thanks for your help Mognut RE: Engine choices - CRD4x4 - 11-11-2015 A rear sump 4 cylinder? I might be bias, but I'd recommend a VM Motori 2.8L 16v for your Unimog for the following reasons; 1) it'll weigh about the same as your current OM616 (485 lbs for 2.8L) 2) has rear sump already so no mods to oil pan, pump/sump 3) it's turbocharged with a modern variable geometry turbo from Garrett making 100 HP more than your OM616 in stock form and can take a chip tuning for much, much more. 4) opens up a few more options for heavy duty transmissons Cons? 1) costly 2) doesn't have the proven history of OM motors (it's a new comer with limited use) 3) electronics 4) probably won't bolt up to your trans but maybe it will. Who knows? I hope this helps! RE: Engine choices - Mognut - 11-11-2015 Thanks for that I'll google for images,I'm also considering a petrol ! What is it with Mercedes and font mounted sumps ? Thank you for your reply RE: Engine choices - MFSuper90 - 11-11-2015 I want a unimog! Too bad they are hard to find in the states and very expensive RE: Engine choices - EmJay - 11-11-2015 If you decide to go petrol, go with a Chevy 4.3? Not too heavy, and I'm sure an adapter exists on the market. RE: Engine choices - Matej - 11-11-2015 You could possibly use an OM602 and put the rear-sump pan from an OM647 on it. That would be nice but there a bit thin on the ground in the UK, I'll see if I can find a conversion kit online, is it the same block as a 5.7 small block ? I've got a 2004 sprinter 311 that's coming to the end of its life although the engines ok, what engine is that and would it fit plus I think the sump is at the front and there's the electrical side to deal with ! Options options? RE: Engine choices - EmJay - 11-18-2015 (11-12-2015, 01:50 PM)Mognut(11-11-2015, 07:42 PM)EmJay If you decide to go petrol, go with a Chevy 4.3?
