Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 02-27-2016 This is my w116 I bought a couple months ago for $500. 220k, mint interior, good brakes, GREAT running om617, and other the creacher comfort crap is basically broken. Just what I want! I plan to base my build off of dieselboys w116 and the captain's w123 Plans to come Alda (obviously) Fender pipe Cut coils, probably 3 front 2 rear. I know that's a good deal Upgraded turbo, probably hy35 Intercooler, yes I really will Injectors, reasearch will determine which Rack limiter Welded diff Delete: AC and powerstearing. Neither work so who cares Maybe a cheap light bar just for fun RE: Beater w116 project - bricktron - 02-29-2016 that will be fun with no PS. sounds heavy duty. RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 02-29-2016 I think the biggest problem with the no PS sourcing a manual box. But it sounds like a fun build. RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 03-02-2016 Ah, it will be fine once I get it rolling, but ya parking lots won't be fun between the no PS and a welded diff . Like I said this is a fun beater. It won't be a daily so driveability is not important. Really only going to be driven for joining or when I'm working on my other cars. Because of this I have done a bit of additional reading and have found a few people hacking up delivery valves to increase fuel flow. My question is how well does this work and how do you do it? Btw m pump is out of the budget. Also I can't figure out how to post pics. RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 03-02-2016 I haven't heard of anyone cutting delivery valves and getting successful results yet. Theses DV don't have a collar on them like a P-pump from a cummins does. If you don't want to spend the $$ on a big plunger pump, turning up your stock pump will be the best bang for you buck. It'll net you about 150hp, maybe a tick more,Maybe less. My car dyno'd at 125 at the wheels with everything in my sig, so that's about 150hp considering driveline loss. Maybe another forum member with more MW DV valve knowledge can chime in. As far as pics, I upload to photobucket then resize and copy the url into the picture thingy. I'm not sure if there is a post requirement before pics or not. RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 03-03-2016 I got the delivery valve idea from here, http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/showthread.php?tid=3644 Another build I'm taking inspiration from. Any thoughts? RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 03-06-2016 Considering people that build injection pumps for a living will tell you that a stock mw will only put out about 60cc full adjusted, 200hp is a laughable estimate. I've seen where people do the math, and 60cc is only enough fuel for 160-170hp at best. Something about the thread just doesn't seem right... I'm not saying it's made up, but I'm skeptical. RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 03-06-2016 That's also what I was thinking, wishful thinking on my part thinking I could get around needing an m pump lol RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 03-06-2016 I am still hopeful for the 10mm MW, there's no such thing as an injection duration that is too short, the bigger the better! M-pumps are hard to find and having to send them overseas to get worked on is costly, even though I am a firm believer that it doesn't get much better than dieselmeken when it comes To Mercedes pumps RE: Beater w116 project - EmJay - 03-06-2016 Instead of a welded diff, why not find an LSD diff and put it in? RE: Beater w116 project - NZScott - 03-06-2016 LSD's that fit are a bit price prohibitive http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Benz-W107-380SL-SLC-W126-380SEL-limited-slip-differential-assembly-LSD-/222032913933?hash=item33b231660d:g:~dcAAOSwBLlVZOto&vxp=mtr RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 03-07-2016 Exactly, even if I could afford it I still wouldn't buy it being that the idea behind this project is the most performance possible with the least amount of cash. If I were to do an LSD it would be on my other project, but that's probably not going to happen unfortunately. RE: Beater w116 project - DrewGerhan - 03-09-2016 (03-02-2016, 09:21 PM)Dark Hawk Ah, it will be fine once I get it rolling, but ya parking lots won't be fun between the no PS and a welded diff . I cut a spare set I had a few years ago. It was the best I could do I'm my garage, but I think it was fairly accurate. That being said, don't do it. It wouldn't return to idle at all after that. Had to swap back in the stock ones. I think I've got a video somewhere of it in the car. Here ya go. https://youtu.be/Y4zVv2eZ0ig RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 03-13-2016 How by it wouldn't return to idel do you mean that it would idel really high, hunt for rpm, or die without some throttle? Because that doesn't seem all THAT bad for a non daily. RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 03-13-2016 You can see in the vid he posted that it takes about 45seconds to go from 3k down to idle lol, that would be bad. RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 03-23-2016 I thought it was the American bumpers that were the size of diving boards lol. RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 03-23-2016 I think those are euros, I could be wrong though RE: Beater w116 project - sassparilla_kid - 03-24-2016 They look like standard US spec bumpers to me RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 03-24-2016 Duh, I forgot it was a w116. I'm too use to the w123 body style I guess RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 03-24-2016 They might be ugly, but I do like how it's basically a bull bar. You can run into anything and it don't give a fuck! I'm thinking of painting the car a matte od green with metalic bronze wheels. You guys think that would look good? RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 04-30-2016 I did a diesel purge a couple days ago and it made a big difference. I did one in the past in tandem with a valve adjustment and it made a HUGE difference but the valves were way out of tune so I didn't really know which was more effective form of of performance enhancing maintanence. I'll be doing a valve adjustment tonight to compare the two. RE: Beater w116 project - Dark Hawk - 05-09-2016 Did the valve adjustment and I'm guessing the valves were adjusted by the previous owner because they really weren't too bad at all. I saw no real "gain" in power though idle seemed a super tiny bit better. The biggest hinderence on the 0-60/quarter mile/ acceleration in general seems to be the transmission. It shifts perfectly smooth, just really slow. Anyone have ANY suggestions? Also an exhaust and Alda will be coming shortly RE: Beater w116 project - MFSuper90 - 05-09-2016 Alfa removal/ adjustment will help tremendously. Also, have you turned up the line pressure on the trans? Helps to firm up the shifts. My is cranked up a lot, it almost bangs when it shifts. But whipplem said they are tough and like a lot of line pressure, so I gave it to it |
