Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 06-14-2016

hi guys,
i´m currently looking for other options than a welded diff in my w202 "drift car". Since i would like to use it more in daily drive, i have been reading a lot about those Phantom grip  LSD convertions.
http://www.carrolatuning.us/domain/carrolatuning/files/phantom-grip-2.jpg

I´ve seen that "JTY" of this forum here installed one in his 300SD and was quite happy with it: http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/showthread.php?tid=996&highlight=Phantom+grip

Anyone else here is using it and can tell me if it´s worth, also for drifting? There are so much threads in the internet from people that say it´s great, and others that say "never buy that shit..."
i would like to know how it will work in mercedes diffs, because i dont think i can´t compare a honda diff with a merc one.
so every opinion is welcome Smile

I have used one for 3 seasons drifting with an ASD diff. And i use the car on daily basis also.

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 06-15-2016

so you can recommend it? Are your videos on youtube from drifting with the 190 with the phantom grip?

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - NZScott - 06-16-2016

Think it's a whole different story with an open diff. ASD is like a LSD already but has no springs just hydraulics

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 06-16-2016

well ASD locks only up to some mph. I thought evopeter installed a Phantom grip into and ASD additionally? I just want to know if the phantom grip is a good thing to convert an open diff to a kind of "LSD" for drifting.

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - erx - 06-16-2016

It's definitely not good for drifting, once one wheel is spinning it's just heating oil and friction between wheels is very low. It is better than without but it's not comparable to real LSD.

If you install this piece into ASD/LSD differential then you have good LSD.

You can use W201/124 ASD diff with your W202. Bolt-on conversion.

W124 asd diff is direct application in w202?

Rear cover might be different but you can use current one. W210 diff can be used in W201/124 for sure.

I have w210 diff in my w202.....

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 06-17-2016

Wich ASD diff fits straight into the w202? Any part number or gearing?

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - hents99 - 06-17-2016

This is small W124 ASD diff. W201 ASD is same except diff cover plate. W210/202 most models use same size.

W124 big ASD diff (162kW+models).  210mm ring gear?

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 06-20-2016

the small one looks exactly like the one in my w202...but if i change the diff i would also need to change my speedo...the the phantom grip would have been an easy thing to do, to bad they are not working like i expected Sad
Thanks anyway for your help guys

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Petar - 06-20-2016

You say you have a w202 ? As far as i know the speedo get's the speed signal via CAN-bus from the ABS. Which in turn uses speed signals directly from the wheels to calculate the speed. So it doesn't care which diff ratio you have, it works the same.

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - bruno_pinho - 06-20-2016

In w202 speed sinal is not the rear wheels....my w202 in dyno teste dont have speedo because the front wheels are stopped...

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - erx - 06-20-2016

I'm not sure how facelift speedo works but my 1994 w202 has big 400cdi diff without abs sensor, ABS light is on but speedo is working, someone said that speed is taken from left front wheel.

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 06-20-2016

ill try that tomorrow...speedo should go up when having wheelspin then...

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Petar - 06-20-2016

From what i've seen there are no sensors on the diff, or the driveshaft or transmission, and no speedo cable. Just 2 sensors mounted on the wheel hubs. The speedo does not seem to be affected by wheelspin. Mine is a 96 C250.

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - bruno_pinho - 06-20-2016

What W124 came out with diff 2.82 or 2.87?

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Petar - 06-21-2016

2.88 was non turbo automatic 300D and 2.82 i think 36 amg.

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - DiseaselWeasel - 06-21-2016

2,88 early, 2,87 later 300D (non-turbo) atomatic sedan only (wagon has 3,07)!

2,87 is very common with W210s, though (but without ABS sensor, so of limited use for 124 chassis).

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 06-22-2016

ASD Diffs are too expensive to get... i will keep my welded diff or sometime try this phantom grip thing

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - bruno_pinho - 06-22-2016

I use in my W202 a diff of W210 2.87 185mm,as I can only find 2.65 asd diff and how are the two 185mm,I can change the final drive 2.87 for ASD diff?

No, different ratios have different gear offset, I wanted to put ASD from 3.07 to 2.65 but it didn't fit.

RE: Phantom Grip LSD? - Repetitio - 05-09-2017

Ok i finally broke my Welded diff Big Grin The housing where it is fixed to the Rear Axle mount just broke... Now i´m trying to get an ASD an convert it to lock it manually.
For infos see:
www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/W124/ASD_Differential_Retrofit.pdf

What do you guys think, originally those ASD diffs only locked up about 30 km/h. Will i break anything in the differential (like lamellar or anything) if i´m locking it up at higher speed and drifting it?
I´ve read about a lot of finish people using this manual locking for drifting. Maybe anyone here can tell his experience with that?
i would be very thankfull for opinions Smile
