722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - jonbobshinigin - 10-05-2009 I have a 1987 300TDT with 170,000 Miles. The engine is strong and I plan on adjusting the IP when I remove it to replace a seal. Actually, there is one I can get for $120 shipped to me that works, exact same model. So I think I am going to get that, adjust it while its out, then swap it with my current leaky one. After this I would like to get a bigger turbo. I am not looking to get 400 hp out of this, but over 200 would be nice. Mostly for more efficiency off the line. Sooo...The transmission has given me fits for a long time and is due for a rebuild. Since I am going to have it rebuilt sooner or later, are there internals I can get for it that will make sure it holds up to more torque? Or are the stock internals strong enough? If you have links please provide them, I have searched all over and I have not found much at all. Thank you!! RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? - ForcedInduction - 10-05-2009 There is a sticky about automatics at the top of the sub-forum. The 87 300D has a 722.317 which is good to 290lb/ft. 200hp should be within that limit. The internals can be upgraded with the 722.6 (W5A580) clutches and bands to get 578lb/ft capacity. Who can/will do this in the USA, I don't know. RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? - jonbobshinigin - 10-06-2009 I looked, and I saw that. However, I would really like to know if a standard rebuild it going to hold up. I plan on putting in a larger turbo and doing some IP work. Would a standard 722.317 hold up to 300hp? RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? - jonbobshinigin - 02-26-2010 Got any data on that Forced? How much in parts would that take estimated? Also, would beefing up a transmission cause it to shift more firmly and lose some of the comfort? RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - jonbobshinigin - 03-03-2010 Ok...I changed the title to Urgent because I am now to the point where I basically have to pull my transmission. It has been pending with a small oil leak for a bit but now the leak is excessive. So I am gonna yank the engine, get tranny rebuilt, replace glow plugs, get injectors tested and upgraded nozzles (any recommendations? ), and addressing my injection pump leak. 2 things i need to know ASAP: I want to put a 3.87 First Gear in the transmission; where do I find one of these? Also, I want the transmission to keep up with more HP, what parts do I need to tell the Benz tech to put in and is it just a "drop in" of different clutches? I have googled these both so I have done due diligence. Now I need some specifics, and fairly quickly! Thanks RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - jonbobshinigin - 08-18-2010 Since I did not find out tons here, I post at "Mersuforum". Here is what I found: http://www.mersuforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=91477 RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - Alastair E - 08-28-2010 (10-05-2009, 09:41 PM)ForcedInduction The internals can be upgraded with the 722.6 (W5A580) clutches and bands to get 578lb/ft capacity. Who can/will do this in the USA, I don't know. The Finns say that this cannot be done--They are quite different. I believe the 722.6 is 'Bandless' trans--Will check when I fully dismantle the one I have--just for grins.... --It was designed from the ground up, and replaced all RWD transmissions in car range from M.B. in 1997/8 model-year.... RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - ForcedInduction - 08-28-2010 I got that information from a Finn. So they're just contradicting themselves or the posters who said they did it were lying. RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - jonbobshinigin - 08-28-2010 They have posted some interesting info in that link. Some of it in inconclusive regarding the 722.6 method, but it does not seem that is the path they use over there. The seem to use 722.362 parts in the standard 722.3 housing. Some mention of a larger drum from the 362 to house the extra/larger discs also. We have the IP thing sorted out, NOW we need to get the transmissions figured out Stateside! RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - Alastair E - 08-28-2010 From what I gather--and this needs confirmation is that the 'drum' refered to on smaller HP transmissions is ally casting rivetted to a steel hub... The .362 'drum' (Or whatever it actually is,--I suspect its the 'Reverse Clutch cage') is an all steel construction.... Ive got a 722.6 thats good but of no use whatsoever to me, so I plan on fully dismantling it. I would also like to get another 722.3 from whatever, and fully dismantle that too, Be interesting to see whats what. I'm not afraid of messing with transmissions like some are, as Ive re-built a few Borg-Warner trans years ago, and I'm guessing that the M.B. one isnt gonna be That much harder! --May even be easier! There are suppliers here in the UK that can supply all the internal parts so that makes life a little easier, Bushes seals and clutch-packs should be no problem.... If we dont try, we'll never know. I cant get the suitable trans. here in the UK, so Ive gotta mess with what I can get, --make up some kind of 'Franken-Trans'.... RE: 722.317 Need Rebuild - How can I make it stronger? (Urgent help needed) - Alastair E - 08-28-2010 Cheers!-- Nice diagrams, Confirms the 722.6 is Bandless at least!--Dont fancy re-building one though.... 722.3 looks to be a much more straightforward trans for re-assembly than the old B-W and 'D.G.' types Ive played with, so definately worth a shot!--Just gotta find a 722.3 'el-cheapo' to play with, as I dont want really to dismantle the 722.369 Ive got lined up to get the 606 in a running state for the W123.... (Its gonna have to be in a 'standard' state of tune, sub 220 BHP, till the trans is done at least) Need then to find 'El-Cheapo' 722.362 / 'V8-12' box to canabalise.... Guys, This is gonna take a while, But at least I'm getting more enthusiastic about it all, Had a time when I thought I would have to go 'Manual'--Which I really dont want to do! |
