OM603 or om606 Injection timing with timing light adapter - vica153 - 11-06-2016 There is plenty of info about setting the injection pump timing with the drip method or other methods, but I can't seem to find much info about using a timing light with an adapter clamped on the #1 injector line. I seem to recall 12 degrees BTDC was what to expect at idle using a timing light adapter. I cant find that info anymore. Does anyone have experience with this? I bought an adapter, so if anyone in the Seattle area wants to know what their timing is let me know. RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - Evgeniy1987 - 11-06-2016 I think that one should not compare static advance at 0 RPM and the advance at 800 RPM. During running, the timing device advances because of the rotational speed, and the pump elements can have influence on advance too, if they are rotated by the rack ( I am at this point not sure whether they are, still need to read books). Therefore these " 12 Deg BTDC" in static drip-test are for sure not (perfectly) valid for a test on a running engine... (please correct me if I'm wrong). YET, there must be some kind of reference value what it then should be! But, where to find it ? RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - barrote - 11-06-2016 lalalla set to read OT at crank, and the box should give u 18º , engine at idle. MB says to use between 16.5 and 17.5 , then test set the value and dadadda of course this is with the MB recomended timing light device. with something else u have to consider the delay in the info pick up... basically set yur own box... regards RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - vica153 - 11-06-2016 I checked an OM617 that was rebuilt 3,000 miles ago and timed with the drip method. With my Sealey timing adapter it was reading 15-16 degrees BTDC, but he added 3 degrees when he timed it so it would have been 12-13 degrees. Of course the injector line clamp was too big for my 603 lines, so I have to get a different clamp before I can check my 603. RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - barrote - 11-07-2016 never mind , The installation timing is just to set the engine in condition of operation, even if u tune by the drip method, then u got to tune more on listening and using if u want to guet the right position for "start of injection". For instace, if u have a slight deviation on the crank puley u can have a engine retarded or advanced by 2 or 3º , its something common, like the pump timing device , "lock positio" is set by the pump builder and again u can have a offset of 2/3º. So dont be surprised if u find a engine running good with 23º BTDC ... RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - vica153 - 11-07-2016 Yes and differences in timing light adapter could also alter the reading. I am just looking for numbers from people that have used a timing light adapter, so I can get a general idea of the range I should be in. RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - barrote - 11-08-2016 Here we use the mb recomended tool wich is stanadyne brand. And we usually set for 17 to 18. Stock engines and all of them. Other engines apart frm mb have other methods. Mb's STD's is a diff story, 18 is to start Then it might be necessary to decrease or increase. Regards. RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - vica153 - 09-26-2017 After lots of searching I still have not found any clamp that fits the OM606/OM603 injector lines. They are ~4.6mm outer diameter. OM617 lines are 6mm. So I machined a sleeve that fits over the the line and hopefully will hopefully let me to finally check injection timing. RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - AlanMcR - 09-27-2017 I believe that you can use a larger clamp and shim the inside. As long as the piezo is pressed against the line it should work. RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - repower - 09-28-2017 I just use a nail to shim the Sealey timing adapter clamp - worked! RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - vica153 - 10-01-2017 Ha I wish I had known it was that easy. My machined sleeve worked. 17-18 degrees BTDC at 570rpm idle. Anyone know what factory pump runs at or dieselmeken pump? RE: OM603 or om60X Injection timing with timing light adapter - vica153 - 10-01-2017 I've had the engine apart and set the timing point right on TDC. So I'm confident in the accuracy of the timing. RE: OM603 or om606 Injection timing with timing light adapter - barrote - 10-02-2017 Why do u suspect your numbers??? They are what everibody is reading more or less degree... RE: OM603 or om606 Injection timing with timing light adapter - vica153 - 10-04-2017 I'm checking timing because my low end power seems a bit sluggish and timing would be the easiest fix. I haven't found anyone else posting numbers using the clamped injector line method. I measured a friends om617 and it ran right around 14 degrees BTDC. That was after adding a couple extra degrees using the drip method. That's a different engine and a completely stock injection pump. Dieselmeken has confirmed that 18 degrees seems about right, but I still don't have any other numbers from people using this timing method. RE: OM603 or om606 Injection timing with timing light adapter - firen456 - 10-05-2017 In the manual of my timing light itsays 17deg for a OM606 NA. So 18 won't be that wrong... |
