606N/A with 5-speed - inkblotz - 02-13-2019

I have a really nice condition 1984 240GD 2 door with 4-speed manual trans. I will be replacing the 240d 616 motor and 4 speed with a 606N/A motor and SLK230 717-460 5-speed transmission. Currently I am having a difficult time finding a proper flywheel for this set-up as the 717-460 takes a Dual mass flywheel. I did a search here and there was some mention that a 250D flywheel would work. I would prefer (especially for a G wagen) to use a single mass flywheel but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks
Mark

You can use pretty much any 1985-2006. Mercedes inline engine dual mass flywheel and clutch as long as it can handle the engine torque, they are all 26 spline clutch disc AFAIK. Or you could use the sprinter cdi single mass conversion flywheel

Thanks do you happen to know the part numbers for that sprinter configuration? Or if you can tell me which year sprinter I will look it up.

Thanks

2000-2006 Sprinter CDI, part no for the kit should be Valeo 835013 AFAIK. You might need to grind down about 1mm from the crankshaft flange, but otherwise it is bolt on. Read this:

If you also have the SLK230 flywheel and clutch it would be quick and dirty version, it should handle the non turbo 606 just fine.

Thats the problem I don't have the SLK230 flywheel and finding nice used ones here in the state is difficult. The dealer only sells remanufactured ones for $600 something, for just the flywheel.
I came across this Dual to single mass solution, but would prefer to go the route you are suggesting.

You can buy a dual mass flywheel from eBay Germany for around $125.00 plus around $80.00 shipping I brought a single mass flywheel for $225.00 including shipping

Will something like this work? From the previous post above looks like the tabs would need to be machined off for it to work. My only concern with the SLK230 flywheel is will it be to light.

The diesel flywheels tend to be heavier. I had thought that a W124 with 606N/A motor flywheel would be a better choice.: 6060300305, 6060300605, 6060300905, 6060301105. Or even one from a OM602. The early 90's 300GD 5-speed with the OM603 motor used: 6020301805 flywheel

If I go with the 300GD flywheel this is available new in UK for about $540 dollars. In the US it would be $1,415: https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/luk-970727.html

The tabs will need to be machined, but only if you need to use the upper speed sensor, the one used for EDC pumps. If you don't need it simply remove the sensor and it should work. My friend has one installed in his 605 N/A W124 and it works just fine. As far as SMF vs DMF dilemma, IMO both are OK, especially if you are not going to tune the engine for more power

Thanks for the replies. I have found a DM flywheel form Italy that came out of a W124 car with a 606N/A motor. I also found a new clutch kit that is made for same set up.

Thanks again
