Looking for an accurate list of US cars with an OM606 - didymus - 10-16-2020
I want to do an engine swap in my Jeep. The only engine I want to do the swap with is an OM606. However, I've only found 1 thread somewhere else that talks about which cars the US had with these engines and the way it was worded was very confusing to me.
Where should I be looking for one? I know this is a real beginner question, but I've searched this forum a number of times looking for the answer.

Something other than wikipedia? The 98-99 E 300 is the only turbo version I've seen in US market cars. Importing from other areas is relatively easy these days though.

Yeah, I've seen that, but I didn't think it specified which were in the US. It was way more widespread in Europe from what I gather. I'm trying to find one in a junkyard that I can drive to, even if it's a road trip. I don't expect I'll find it tomorrow, but eventually. Yeah, it is easy to do, but it will almost double the price.

Importing from other areas is relatively easy these days though.98-99 is the only years for the OM 606 in the states as stated. Best place to find an engine is E-bay or Carpart.com or Craigslist.

I bought a 99 through Ride Safely salvage auction site for my swap. Sometimes they appear on Facebook Marketplace too. Mine was a rustbucket so I got it cheap. Bendtsen sells the adapter plates for them too. Mine has worked out well. You will love it and I suggest a DSL1 ecu for it retaining the oe Bosch electronic IP. The 606 pulls my F150 around nicely.

If you want an OM606A (the turbo variant) then a 1998-1999 W210 E300 is what you want. There are about seven 1996-2001 W463 G300 models in the US and not one of them is going to sell you their engine.

For the US market, the only OM606 turbo are 1998 and 1999 W210 E300. 1996 and 1997 W210 E300 were OM606 NA. All W210 used an electronic pump. 1995 W124 E300D were OM606 NA and used a mechanical pump. The W140 did not sell in the US with an OM606. I don't know about the G-wagen, but it's unlikely to be a donor vehicle.
I found my engine by searching on row52.com for Mercedes E-class 1998-1999, and looking for VINs that began with WDBJF25. W[est Germany] D[iamler] B[enz] JF25 is the code for these cars; most are of course the E320 and a few E430 (never seen an E500 or AMG in a junkyard, but it's possible). In this manner, I found one in a Picknpull 4 hours away (each way), asked very nicely for confirmation the engine was still in it, thanked profusely for resulting photos, left at 3am to be there before they opened, and took it home at Picknpull's going rate, a bit over $300 out the door. Previous plan was to buy a running car for about four-five times that.

What about a MS3Pro? I really want to mess with one of those. Thanks for the info. I am reading about the DSL1 ECU now. One of the main reasons why I want to do this is because it's all kinda new to me so it's super fun.

You cannot use a petrol ECU on a diesel engine.

Why not?
At the very basics all you need is RPM,TPS, & MAP inputs and an output to the injection pump.
IAT would be needed to really fine tune the fuel map. EGT and coolant temp inputs would be good to have for safety. A spare input to monitor rack position would be nice. A PWM ouput for wastegate control.
Those are all things that are standard on aftermarket ECUs these days.
That said, the DSL1 is probably the choice out there. Its not expensive, it works well on the 606 pump, and there seems to have good support. Plus Iceland is a cool place. Only reason to not use it would be if you already had a good quality standalone collecting dust in your garage.

The control strategies for a diesel are just nothing like the control strategies for controlling an engine that is throttled by the amount of air that enters it. There's no similarity in how they are controlled.

Don't forget the HDK rack position sensor which is necessary to control the rack position - not so easy to control. In the stock ECU it uses a specialized chip (CC215) which is no longer available. It uses 2 counterphase 10 kHz sine waves and and adjusts the voltage of one of them until the center tap of the sensor reads 0 volts. Not a simple task.

If you're looking for an 0m606.962(turbo version) your only option in us equipped cars are the 98-99 E300TD. A non turbo version was available in the 96-97 e300d. I would avoid that engine if you want some decent power and tuneability.
