automatic flywheels - oel_brenner - 12-26-2009 so on my W126 project, the 3.5L engine came out (1990 350 SDL) and had what I expected for a flywheel: but the 3.0L donor engine that came out of a (1987 300 SDL) had this one: weighted.. not like a manual car, but certainly more mass then the other one.. which do I use ? does it matter ? pros cons either way ? anyone else seen this weighted one ? I am a bit of a 126 noob.. never seen this on a 124 RE: automatic flywheels - ForcedInduction - 12-27-2009 Interesting. How do the torque converters compare in mass? The heavier one will give a bit more off the line torque but the lighter one will allow the engine to accelerate faster. RE: automatic flywheels - oel_brenner - 12-27-2009 (12-27-2009, 06:45 AM)ForcedInduction Interesting. How do the torque converters compare in mass? well from outward appearance they look identical part number on the 3.5L converter: (this trans has been re-built / replaced very recently) 124 250 0302 0690 part number on the 3.0L converter (87 126): 126 250 2302 2287 just for reference.. part number off converter that came out of my 87 124 126 250 2302 4586 (12-27-2009, 06:45 AM)ForcedInduction The heavier one will give a bit more off the line torque but the lighter one will allow the engine to accelerate faster. yeah, I figured that.. the heavier one I think will be good for the wife's daily driver, probably more "drive-able" around town and whatnot.. RE: automatic flywheels - oel_brenner - 12-27-2009 test fit the convertor that was already in the car against this heavier flywheel and everything seemed to fit fine, so I wound up using the heavier flywheel that came on the 3.0L. engine is in, bolted up.. and most of the major stuff hooked up. I will finish up tomorrow and take her for a test drive.. stay tuned. |
