Turbo Upgrade
Turbo Upgrade
Hello;
I am new to this place so my question my look stupid to some or all of you.
Now I am trying to do some upgrade (turbo, intercooler, sending IP pump to Finland...). Based on my research my car (1987 300D) has a KKK K24. I was wondering if I could replace it with a VNT and if so, what is the largest pump that would be a drop-in. If I can not use a VNT, then again what would be the largest traditional turbo that would be a drop in for my car.
thanks
ben
ps; the chassis is 124.133, engine 603.690, and the transmission 722.317.
Largest is not best. The turbo needs to be matched to your engine's power for good performance, otherwise the powerband will be very narrow.

The VNT way will work fine, but to get those numbers you will need to increase full a good deal, regardless of the turbo. The VNT would be best for maximizing your torque curve.
Forced, what did you gain from your 2256, 5-10 hp on the top end? Would there have been any more if the exhaust pressure were lower with a larger turbo?
Anyway, 603 owners in the past have increased the pump to full setting, with the stock turbo, and gotten around 175 hp (peak). I'd be willing to bet that full stock pump setting plus a better turbine might get you to 190 or so..that is just a wild estimate though. The stock t3 can actually flow a decent amount of air, but it would still benefit from being cooler. I think the user who increased the pump setting noted having smoke at higher rpms.
Peak power aside, the VNT will definitely add lots of torque, and thus horsepower, throughout the low and mid range compared with the stock turbo.
