What does every one think about placement of a OM606 in an old 220D?

Has any one experienced this kind of swap or have any ideas? I would consider an OM617 swap but I might be disappointed with the power out put. I want to be able to tune 200-300hp. I can do this with the myna pump for a 603 motor.

This old 220D will be turned into a classic racer with modern power. I believe it will be easer for ME to tune suspension on these models with ease. I worked on a race team in my High School days (Monte Carlo VW powered Mini Super) So I know how to get a car set up on coil springs, gear ratio ect.

Thanks

This was built by a friend of mine. Said it needed some "adjustments" but not that hard swap. The owner of the car has changed, but it still has non-opened engine and has been driven for over 75k miles now with about 400hp.

If I only didn't have my current daily driver and would find a decent W123.. Cool

If a 617 will fit I don't see why a 606 won't fit. Like the 617 you'll probably have to relocate the oil filter to clear the steering box, possibly the starter too.

I did some recce this weekend. My 300TD got beat in the dirt. The car rallies great: blown sls, winter tires, and a full tank. It seems to be a great setup. Even hit some 1-2 snow! It was a good shake down of the old car what a beater LOL.

Those cars have some serious power.
So I do think any Mercedes with 300-400hp would end up in the ditch or on a curb if I drove it. Nice to know that I could turn up the boost and pump and put er down on some of those STI Turbos out there.
It's good to know that the OM606 has a wide range of power. I think my current 1983 300TD will get the swap first. It's time to re-power these old beasts! I really don't want some old sh*t smoker Mercedes that only has a 145 HP maybe 220 MAX. I already have a old smoker 617 with about 100HP.

So time to start the motor search, call the my usual Russians and get to work.
I'm going to wreck this old wagon I know it Smile
What trans did he use in that blue car? I hope to keep this old wagon auto. Seems to keep up the spool better with shifts.
Thanks boys

Wow not a 722.6?

What does "strengthened" mean specifically?

Maybe swap the pump, shaft, clutches and parts.
Maybe there are some new Dodge Charger trans parts out there in the yards? 722.xxxx part number is what I will start looking for.
Any one built one of these trans yet? There is a builder in the PnW that build the trans for the old 6.9 cars he works on pumps for them too... any way check your local Seattle Craig's List thats where I saw his add.

(04-12-2010, 09:16 PM)GREASY_BEAST Wow not a 722.6?

Not 722.6, which I think is always electrically controlled. Correct if I'm wrong.

Transmission specialists don't want to tell all the secrects they do, which is undestandable. My 722.3 is built in the same place as the green one's. Basically they add clutch plates and modify the valve body plus the unspoken mods.

That's my understanding. I don't think anyone has built an aftermarket controller for it either (or one that works well). Sad

(04-13-2010, 11:27 AM)GREASY_BEAST The reason I asked about the 722.6 is because its rated to handle some ungodly amount of torque, and available really inexpensively.

Custom mods not withstanding, I think the transmissions are upgraded with clutch packs, etc from the V12 and other high performance engines mated with the 722.3. I think some of the 722.6 clutch packs might fit in the 722.3?

Here are some torque values we know about...

I chose 722.3 for my car because I was in a belief that a strengthened 722.3 would handle just about anything, as is commonly spoken. One gearbox already gave up, the second gear failed totally but also 3. and 4. had slipped. The builder of the current one is considered the best Merc tranny builder in here, but we'll see.

I don't think electric control as a problem, but didn't even consider those trannies as I was in a belief that 722.3 will be good enough and will bolt straight on to engine. Now I'd choose ZF 5hp24 or 722.6.
