I have an 85 300d turbo w123 with the original 617. I have bypassed the original air filter and housing due to the fact that the mounts on it broke and because of its vibrating and free will/ movement it had almost destroyed/separated the sheet metal part of the hood from the hood frame\reinforcements that it was glued to from the factory, plus it made a god awful clacking\ rattling noise that was embarrassing at a stop light. I have a turbo hose (possibly modified) from an older Benz diesel that takes the oil mist from the valve cover and runs it through the turbo, the part of the tube where the housing would go has a mouth that measures just shy of 3.5 inch I am currently running a homemade air filter on it (long story don’t ask unless desperate for cheap temporary fix) on the first I will be buying a (conical/cone shaped air filter) I want/need to know which is the best to use (if possible be specific about size, brand, length, type, and best performing/ band for your buck) also if any what modifications I will need to perform, and what tubing to use if current intake tube is not recommended.

It has 4" ABS pipe with a 4-2.5" reducer for the turbo inlet for minimal air velocity. It lasts 1-2 years before reaching 15"H2O restriction and it will fit the stock engine with A/C.

I moved the old 8038 filter system to the 240 and built a new one for the 300. Its basically the same setup except I used an 8037 filter, a long radius tube, mounted the filter further from the fender to prevent it rubbing the IC hose and mounted the restriction gauge directly to the elbow. CCV is vented to the atmosphere, no oil to foul the turbo or intercooler!

   

The 37 has a 3.63" mouth instead of 3.59". Its not much difference, but its just barely enough for it to fit tightly over the 4" end of the ABS pipe without modification. Its the same length but 7.25" diameter instead of 6.5".

Cost
3" of straight ABS tube and ABS cement leftover from other filter system- about $9
ABS elbow- $4.91
Flex coupler- $6.52
Fram 8037- $19.99 (autozone)
Total: About $48 after tax.

I'm going to get a 2.5"-3.5" silicone reducer to replace the rubber sewer adapter. The rubber pipe works fine, but its a bit too flexible for my desire and too thick to mount flush on the 2256's mouth.

2.5 inch will work thats what i have on mine you just gotta make sure and get the clamp nice and tight

    Can you show me more of this set up, what is that air box on the left and where is the air coming in, looks like it comes in under it, wow. I thought it would have to come from the front where the stock set up is? Until I saw this I was going to make a custom air box for a cone filter up front like in the picture I added here.

in basics it is Italy based company that produces
those filters in metal housing so it is easy to avoid heat.
sprintfilter is the name. I have used 80/70mm.
with used tubing/seals from old filter housing.... it seats perfectly.


   

I made oil separator from original ... but in due bad weather
did not manage to plug it ...yet Big Grin
