OM 602 - Gwagon 290 GDT
Gents,
I have just found you so please excuse me asking for help without having contributed anything here yet.
I have a 290 turbodiesel G wagon (OM 602). It goes into limp mode from time to time and I have difficulty getting diagnostic help for it.
I pressure washed the engine, drove 3 km and suddenly went into what feels like limp mode except that it starts perfectly, idles normally and sounds perfect, with no smoke but only gets 0.45 bar boost on my VDO cockpit guage (normally 0.95 - 1.0 bar). Normally limp mode shows an orange EDC light and the engine sounds very rough with white smoke. There is none of this time. I am on the point of stripping off the turbo but I do not believe this to be the trouble. I have checked all the more obvious things like plumbing, fuses and connections.
I rely on this vehicle regularly to go to remote place and I do not understand how this injection control system works
Question 1. Can anyone suggest where I can begin to solve my current problem?
Question 2. Is there any literature, bosch publication etc or an "Idiots guide to OM 602 injection systems" so that I can help myself in the future?
Thank you.
Andrew.
Hi Andrew,
first thought: can you check if the waste gate operation works when the car is in limp mode?
When it is in limp mode will it stay there?
Does it stay also there when you switch it off and on again?
You describe it comes up suddenly so filter issues can be excluded?
Tom
Tom. There is no alarm condition that the ECU is giving ie the IDC light is off as if the vehicle is OK and not in limp mode. But it is 0.45 bar boost pressure - dead. No power. It is permanently like that now.
The waste gate is a straight mechanical unit. I am not sure how to check this. My original thought was waste gate failure but it was so sudden from full boost to half boost that it made nme suspect electronics first.
INC - what is the "needle lift sensor" - is this found on no. 1 injector? If so I will check this.
Thank you both.

(05-30-2010, 05:30 AM)Boy G Thank you INC. I measured the sensor = 0 ohm. I then went to a man who has STAR diagnostic and he confirmed this fault.
Now the sensor is not available from MB. Only the complete injector + sensor for approx. $1300.
