What is the preferred muffler choice?
This is my first post here. Been searching around for a day or so and I'm very excited I found this site.
The exhaust system on my 83 300SD is in very bad shape and I'm gonna need to replace the mid section as well as the rear section. I've seen many people just straight piping, but I'm thinking that its gonna drone a little too much for me on the highway. I've searched and I didn't really see anything regarding muffler choices and noise levels.
I'm planning on replacing the resonators with a straight pipe and having a single muffler at the rear. Has anyone does this, and if you have what did you use to keep the interior drone down?
I gotten rid of the middle resonator and kept the original muffler, Theres a slight drone @ 1500 rpm but its not annoyingly loud and wont cause vibration, above and under 1500 rpm theres no droning noise, highway cruising nothing (60-70 mph @ 2500-3100 rpm). If you floor it theres a nice bass sound you can hear in the inside, but if you accelerate normally theres very little to none.
Outside of the car theres a deep bass sound between 1000-2000 rpm (you wont hear it in the cabin). Above 3000 till 4000 rpm there a deep bass sound. Overall i like it i have this setup for 1 1/2 years.
Here is a couple of interesting post or threads on the subject that may help you out.

That was what I was going to do but I think the consensus is that will draw too much attention to a cali smog car... so I'm going out the passenger fender instead.
300slr pop's in to mind for the side exit exhaust!
I'm pretty much going to be replacing everything from about the front passenger seat back because of rust and/or broken mounts.
I was thinking of going with a magnaflow muffler, but I just didn't want to have a drone issue after the fact.
I just built a 3" exhaust with a big-ish Magnaflow muffler and no resonators. It is certainly louder, and there is some sound when under load at about 1800-2400rpm but it is not unpleasant. However your car will sound different because I have a very loud turbo (HX30). Also, I imagine you are looking at 2.25" pipes and mufflers? This may also cause different behavior because the exhaust will be moving quite a lot faster in a smaller tube.
I've got a straight pipe on my 240d turbo and its not that loud at least it dose not drown to bad
