I plan to build an exhaust system basically from scratch, (with the initial exception of the downpipe and flexjoint)
that section is 2.5" pipe (actually its probably 60mm metric pipe)

for the start it will be basically stock, with mild IP and boost / intercooler mods
followed shortly by a turbo upgrade and IP re-working (perhaps myna stuff)
this would include a custom header for the new turbo.

target HP around 200 or so at the end game
I would like a mild exhaust note, nothing loud like the fan-boy riceburners out there

what successes has everyone seen ?

should I overbuild up front ? 3" pipe ?
is 2.5" too small ?
what muffler are people using?

The stock system is very good as-is, Mercedes didn't skimp out on it's design.

For only 200hp, I'd just do a mufflerectomy and be happy. The center resonator is a straight through flow.

If this is for his 107 he'll need to fabricate something.

It is for the 107, but I ask for my 124 as well..

how restrictive is the stock muffler ?

what else is out there ?

I think I will wind up fabricating the system for the 107 with 2.5" stainless tubing
using the stock section of downpipe/flexjoint that came off the 124
( it fits perfectly.. Smile )

any suggestions on a muffler ?

The muffler is fairly straight, but not quite. I would got with a can on a stick type muffler and leave the resonator in place.

3" straight. Really isn't too loud and sounds more tractor than a ricer.

does anyone have any opinion on the the following mufflers :

all of these have single inlet and dual outlet which is what I want to use on the SL project

I think I am going to run 3" pipe all the way back to a single muffler at the rear, and if that is too loud
I will put an additional muffler straight-thru type muffler about halfway back

Get a straight through flow muffler designed specifically for a turbo diesel. Just because a muffler has "turbo" in the name does not mean its for a turbo engine.

The worst thing you can put on a turbodiesel is a chambered/reverse flow muffler. The worst thing you could put on any car at all is a Flowlacker!

Look up Aero exhaust.

no offense, but give me a little credit.. "turbo" marketing does nothing for me..
I was just posting a selection of mufflers available that fit my requirements of single inlet /dual outlet
and also trying to spark some discussion on what successes others have had Wink

I used a bunch of stock exhaust from a few cummins powered trucks. It's 3 1/2" straight pipe. It sounds pretty good especially with the propane cranked up! It's a little droney (is that a word?) above 75mph though.

never thought of that !!

the exhaust on my 2001 cummins powered RAM is stock..
I could upgrade that and re-use the parts on the 107 !!!

3 1/2 may be too big though..

I like the muffler forced suggested.

good idea though, I may crawl under th truck and have a look-see

It took a couple of old exhaust systems to complete the car. But your local diesel performance shop probably has a ton of stuff laying around.

I dunno if the transmission is slipping or not. It goes through the first two gears very quickly now. It doesn't seem to slip, but I'm sure it will after I add some more air and turn the full load screw out. I'll keep you posted.

I don't really know if the tire wear is worse or not. (I don't drive it that often or far) It's a little crazy when the propane is on. I can get it sideways pretty easy. This last weekend I took out the rack limiter, and turned the torque capsule a full turn. The bottom end is about the same but the top end is tons better. I'm a little dissapointed really. I thought there would be some more fuel with all the crap I have done to it. Hmmm.... time for delivery valves and injectors I guess?

As for the transmission that you asked me about before. Yes it slips. Well, until I adjusted the throttle cable to transmission tighter, and I also only run about 5 inchs of vacuum at idle to the transmission. It shifts pretty hard now with light throttle but that is the way you have to drive most of the time up here. (traffic)The shifts are all firmed up now and it doesn't slip at wide open throttle anymore either. Good times!!!

Probably better off just increasing the modulator pressure... This addresses the problem directly rather than applying a band-aid fix (the bowden cable) or something expensive (a custom driveshaft). Still not quite sure how to do this.. :ugeek:
