If you were given a year and unlimited resources to make a OM602 put out 3-400 ponies what would you do?

Okay Let me get more specific, I have a turbo 602 mated to a 5 speed that I will be taking out of a wrecked vehicle. Hoping to rebuild the engine with 3-350 horses being the goal. I know I would need a superpump from derv, a large turbo and intercooling, Boost and temp guages in each manifold would probably be there as well. Any other suggestions? Would I need to modify the head at all?

Sell it and buy an OM606, HX35 turbo and DervTuning pump.

You would need custom rods to hold that much power. Such as the ones jeemu has.

You're looking at a $10,000+ project for the engine alone including the rebuild, IF you can get any of the Finns to sell you a set of their rods or find a shop that will make them for you.
A 603 is good to about 300hp on stock internals, that means you'll be around 250hp before parts start becoming flexible. Less if the engine was not originally turbo.

I do agree do get a 606 or strive for a 603 and hope for the best with 300hp. Exact goal I will be striving for.

Yup, me too....

OM.606.97 quad-valve Turbo motor has proved much more tunable than the bi-valve 603.--Less overall work to do to the motor itself. Really would recommend it--they are built very strong...

Depending where you are in the world, they can be had at a reasonable price. I just picked up complete 1998 W210 E300TDT rustbucket with great engine, full MB-SH, blah blah for 300 quid!

There is a guy here in UK (Hughf) who is putting 606 into W201 190 gasser car. He has dumped all the electronics and fitted OM.603 pump...

Forced,--

I'm interested in your choice of turbo for the 606,--what you reckon its drivability and max power would be with that set-up--As you know, I'm not looking for real heavy all out Max power, but summit that will be nicely drivable but have the power there when needed (Getting really pissed at all those snotty VW Golf TDi's that plague the roads round here....).....

If i start build an OM602 over 400hp

Custom cams
Bigger valves
Stiffer valve springs
Port head
Hone block
New piston rings
New tbo bearings
OM605 rods, with new bolts
Custom exhaust and intake manifold
At least 7mm injection pump. 8mm better
Big turbo.

Ps i have now original OM605 turbo rods.

So the 602 turbo engine wouldn't be ideal for a reliable-ish 300? Is it just the rods?

602 and 603 are earlier 2 valve engines.

605 and 606 are the later quad valve engines.

Jeemu originally started out with N/A 605 engine he modified with Turbo pistons and Turbo rods from 605 Turbo motor, but his cyl. block is original N/A block....
--The cyl-head has been modified with larger valves and heavier springs. I Think he has N/A cams....

602/603 is OK, but 605/606 Turbo engines MUCH better starting place!

If 300hp is enough, you no need to do engine anything. Just put good 7mm pump and custom exhaust manifold and Holset hx35.

My opinion is still is good put new bearings and hone block and rebuild new piston rings. Head gasket of 605 turbo with Vht.
