OM 617.951- At the spot where the turbo connects to the intake manifold, there is a connector piece inside there that looks to be fairly restricting that passage from the turbo into the engine. If one were to remove that piece from the inside, and replace it with piece of intercooler boot around the outside, would that help airflow into the engine at all? Or just be a waste of time/money? Thanks.

Even though it looks like it, there is no restriction at that point. The inner diameter of the compressor outlet and the ID of that connector are the same.

I could be wrong lol

Removing it wouldn't be a good idea. Rounding or flaring the sharp inner edge that goes into the manifold had been said to help and tested on a flowbench if I remember correctly.

No. The tube is actually a cone that gradually tapers from the turbo's ID to the manifold inlet's ID. Removing it would introduce an expansion chamber and lots of turbulence.

No. The tube is actually a cone that gradually tapers from the turbo's ID to the manifold inlet's ID. Removing it would introduce an expansion chamber and lots of turbulence.

I went to DADC (now Lincoln Tech). The initialism "Denver Adult DayCare" is accurate as it was mostly (99%) high school failures with no actual interest in the field. I would not recommend it to anyone.

I have heard good things about Wyotech and if I could get a do-over it would be my choice.

I had heard that the 180* bend in the U-tube on the stock air box is a common restriction point. If that were to be removed and a 180* silicone intercooler boot clamped in it's place, would there be any gains to be had in doing so?

Also, what is the diameter of the airbox output and the turbo intake?

At that point you should just put a custom cool air filter in there by the headlight

Yea, I was debating doing that. I just spent $15 on a new air filter bracket though so i'd feel kinda guilty just scrapping it. I've been wanting to do a set up like FI's for awhile now, just havent really gotten down to it. Where might I find a air/oil seperator for the crank gases anywho?

No. If you notice its a pancake shape that aids in reducing flow restriction by keeping the air's velocity more stable from the inside of the angle to the outside.

There really isn't a good one available that isn't extremely overpriced or very undersized. Most people have made one from a PVC tube or 1/2" airline water separator. The one used on 81+ 240D models is primarily a crankcase depression valve instead of an oil separator.

I recently installed a 8038 filter with a 3" "street" 90 degree ABS elbow and a 3"to 2" rubber reducer to the turbo. I thought it whistled good with just the straight pipe. Daaamn it sure got better, and that turbo spooling is sweet music... Thanks for all the helps guys. Pixs to come.

There is nothing wrong with the 8038 but the 8037 is larger and fits on the tube without having to enlarge the filter mouth.

Yea, the 8038 is a tight fit in the SD w/ euro lights, i'd believe the 8037 is even tighter, and may actually not fit. I didnt have to enlarge the filter's mouth though, just used a little bit of silicon lube and that generic elbow grease stuff...
