Out with the old plastic 4-speed knob, in with the new Eaton 9-speed knob with integrated air switch. Not only does it look good, its functional. I got rid of the electric solenoid valve and all the wiring and replaced it with a simple mechanical switch to control the turbo.

I drilled and tapped the head end of a 1/2"-13 bolt to fit the M10x1.0 shifter stalk. 5/32 air lines go from the vacuum valve on the IP to the shifter and out the passenger side of the dash to the turbo. Flip the switch and the vacuum is vented form the turbo's actuator and the vacuum source blocked. That gives me VERY fast spooling and full boost all the time.

It still works great. I'm very happy with the change.

It controls the vacuum better as well. The electric valve must have been sticking since when it released the vacuum I had to get the boost up to 10psi before the vanes would release. With this valve it goes right back where it should.

With the switch in the 'off' position your VNT is controlled by the gradual change in vacuum as rpm's rise? Then in the 'on' position you have All boost all the time?

'Jurgen' - 1982 300sd cream paint with palimino MB tex interior. Now running with new cooling systemBig Grin.......discovered oil cooler has pinhole @#$%@Angry Nitrile gloves back on......

'Otto' - 1985 300sd anthracite? grey/silver? with grey leather interior. (heated front seats!!!!Cool ) Euro headlights

Mods are in the works...

Right. The vacuum control valve on the IP varies vacuum based on engine load (throttle position). The vacuum actuator's force opposes the wastegate actuator's force to reduce the boost needed to move the arm (vanes).

With the switch up, the vacuum is vented from the actuator and the wastegate actuator limits the boost pressure.
