My 1987 300D
My 1987 300D
Yes. Car has issues but I drove it back without issue from Raleigh, with one stop at JR's Cigars. Car had torque, no power. Replaced the overboost solenoid and power is much better. Trying to figure out the EGR system and bypass all that crap. The car was clunking in every gear but I found a disconnect in the vacuum spaghetti. Still clunks some but not nearly as bad. Needs new struts up front but rides like a dream on the highway at 80. Not at all like the W123's. That extra sound wall makes all the difference in the world. Klima is not working at all, checked the fuses last night. Most look crappy but all appeared serviceable. Body is cream puff not a scratch or ding. Interior is pretty good the drivers power seat needs fixing and the rear windows and door jamb wiring needs attention. I think with a marginal amount of work this is going to be one nice ride. The only bad thing is tapping from the front end, however I understand that the hydraulic tappets are pretty easy to replace so hoping that will solve it. The injectors all need to be pop tested and cleaned, will be doing that as soon as money permits.
Are you planning on modding this at all or since it is the wifeys will it stay pretty much stock? I picked up an 87 300d about two months ago now and am wanting to start doing a few things to it now that I have a couple kinks worked out. (deleting egr like you are planning and a few other things) Im not really sure where to start as I havent done much modding to merc diesels before, so i was hoping you were going to get things done on this first (since I believe you and forced Know almost all when it comes to these beasts) so I could sort of follow suite ...
Two words. Five Speed. Maybe put dropped springs in there with sport suspension. Otherwsie leaving it stock. I already bypassed EGR when I removed the vac to EPA crap.
Nice. Im doing my drop springs and other suspension things soon. Just trying to decide what shocks etc to run as I already have the springs. what 5 speed do you plan on swapping in? How was bypassing the EGR and removing the vac?
Hi Winmutt, I am right there with you on the five speed. What will be your flywheel? I ordered a w124 flywheel from the U.K. (w124 250d) and received a dual mass which apparently won't work with my "long input shaft" transmission. I have asked the question whether removing the pilot bearing and its housing from the dual mass flywheel and allowing my transmissions long imput shaft to protrude through to the crank would work but the answer I got from Kozuka? was to keep like parts together and not mix them.. still very curious

pic's please w124 are very nice cars
Sigh. I posted elsewhere about this but the first week and first oil change I did I forgot to put it in P after coming off the ramps. Collided with Nightmare (probably straightened some of the metal on it) and took out drivers side headlight/turn signal and crunched the plastic bumper. I got replacements for all of it but it has the second gen turn signals (which really do look better) and my replacement was first gen. The old lens popper right off with only a tiny crack in it so instead of spending $50 on a turn signal I am going to spend $3 on some super glue and see if I can get it fixed. Zetigeist was helpful in obtaining replacement parts on the cheap. Thread on Benzworld is here :
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w124-e-c...-here.html
Anyways first time I have done such a boneheaded move and I have been to embarassed to take pics yet. Doing some work on it today so I'll see if I can snap a few.
So my wife is getting the new 91 300d and I am taking over this project.
Flywheel obtained. And just in time, H&R has released a new product for the W124 :
I will be buying the rear end kit for the W124 from Rusty@buymbparts, his OEM price is only ~$40 over the cheap chinese ebay kits.
In the mean time I am shopping around for a #22 head....
Pics finally.
This is the corner that hit the RV. Not to shabby looking. Bumper still needs some alignment but the one that is on there is geting replaced with an matched OE for rear or a bodykit down the road.
I skipped the H&R spring and shock combo in favor of the H&R springs and bilstein sports.

I need to get me a newer model Benz, w201 or w124

yeah, but less character!
That is a nice looking car though.
Funny that you are moving forward at the same time that im moving backwards, just bought a 115 a few weeks ago.
Couple years you will be running around in a CDI and ill be cruising in a stanley steamer!
I like that w201 with the 320cdi that the Mercedes engineers built!
They are a bit on the small side but hell that's what the 300sdl is for!
I forgot to upload this picture. 1.3" drop in the front. Rear end is still unmolested. I am concerned about dropping the rear 1.3" as well. I will probably buy a bump spring pad in the back because I think 1.3" will be too much.

Came on the palette today. Need to figure out DS solution and I am putting this puppy in. Probably going to take a day off during the week to do it.
DS shop just called for specifics. Kid sitter is setup this weekend. DiametricalBenz and my coworker are going to help me. Maybe my nephew as well.
Cant wait.
Where did you get the peddle set? Do you know if the w124 peddle set would fit in the w126? looks like a fun car!
I am black and blue and sore all over. Trans is in, the rear diff yoke is bigger than the trans (and th DS I pulled to have cut) so back to the DS shop to get the yokes swapped.
Good news is that the proper crossmember is still avail and was a whopping $32! I got mine from Rusty at buymbparts.biz (call him).
What did you use for a flywheel? Do the 603 have any problem with a lighter gas flywheel's?
Dropnosky traded me a m103 fw as part of me selling him the 5spd for a 123. Seemed really smooth, but then again I was paying more attention to the tach (long argument on benzworld about where the tach pick up was), the shifter (which is just fucking wierd), and the clutch (which is really high) and I only went around the block a few times.
Just read the argument on Benzworld while looking for the flywheel torque numbers(weird how that happens...), and have a question.
Got a pic of that sensor installed handy, part number perhaps?
I'd like to put the factory sender in my adapter plate if I can, takes the burden of finding one that will work off my hands.
He made his own adapter plate for a trans mission swap but is running a Mercedes flywheel!
Yeah, can't find a stock plate that fits a Mitsu trans. I'm using a modified Benz flywheel, so I thought I might as well use the Benz sensor.
Time to fit up the EPC on monday when I have time.
Got back into the seat of this car. Pedal cluster had to come out againas the tang for the brake light switch was missing off the brake arm. Its all buttoned and driving. It is no where near where I want it, but it should last through till spring. Def need the bigger yoke/flex disk. The rear end certainly needs replacing, 2.88 gear will be right I think. Needs a stiffer pressure plate, I wonder if there is a handy chart of part numbers and clamping pressures ala 123.
Was there any fuss with speed sensors for the speedometer or cruise? I really want to do a similar swap in my 87 300sdl I'm seriously thinking about getting the SLK 6spd
Despite claims of the ridiculous, the tach sensors are picked up on the flywheel starter ring teeth and the speedo is on the transmission output. I do not know how the speed is measured on the 6 speed.
Been a while since I updated. Usually when I get stuck on a problem I dont update until its resolved. A few days after the trans was put in the car developed a horrible squeak in the front end. I was stumped as to the problem but eventually narrowed it down to bj/shock. Replaced the BJ (which was put in back in Sept) and squeek is gone. I also replaced spring shims and the car seems to have a nicer ride to it.
I adjusted my IP linkage and the car is completely different. WOT in 3rd makes my heart beat faster. A side effect is that my idle is higher and the clacking noise from the engine is all but gone around 900 rpm. I have read that the oil galleys in particular are prone to failure on the #14 head, I am guessing I have low oil pressure.
The clutchl I used was an 8.5" and there is a 9" available. I had some slippage at wot after it sat for a while (the squeek was that bad) but it has embedded now.
Drove 6hrs round trip today to visit Kool Korner Groceries (now Sandwich Shop) in Birmingham AL and picked up some new shoes on the way! Can't wait to see how they look on the car! Birmingham is a very nice and hilly city.
Not bad for $300 and more than 50% tread left on Michelin Pilots. Nice guy to, off his wifes SLK. He was British but had a southern US accent. LOL funny.
(01-23-2011, 04:23 PM)winmutt Filled up for 33.4 mpg today. Not shabby. 95% hwy 2 adults, 2 kids trunk full of wheels.
