Can someone tell me if the starter is the same between a '84 Cali car and a '82 Fed car?

Parts numbers seem to show the same on Parts Geek and AutohauzAZ but I know from looking the solenoid on the federal '82 is roughly in the 12:00 position while the solenoid on the '84 Cali car is in the 6:00 position....

1982 300D Turbo ... 3,6xxlbs, No fan, No AC, Hood Stack, No ALDA, No rear bumper and stuffed front, A/W Intercooled, Injectors by Greezer and HUGE Pre-Chambers with help from OM616 & Simpler=Better, Fuel Cranked up, 60 Trim Compressor wheel, EGT, EMP, Boost 50" Rigid Radius bar on roof Aux tank for a total of 48 Gal Of Diesel! Odyssey PC-1750 Battery in trunk, 27"x8.5"/R14 Maxxis BigHorn Mud Terrains, In June '14 issue of Off Road Mag

I bet you the difference is maybe just a production update along the line with the starter manufacturer. The only think I can imagine making them different would be a solenoid interference problem with the Cali emissions system.

Do you happen to have any pics of the starters? I am trying to find a starter with a solenoid down on the side, or bottom, and the 6:00 position has promise if I can find one.

Well I have both cars and both starters but I would like to do is pull the starter from the 84, rebuild it, and slap it on my 82 with no downtime on the 82. I think using the 84 starter with the downward pointing solenoid would be better anyway in the fact it has a heat shield on top of it and the solenoid would be away from the turbo/exhaust... Sorry no pics...

As Forced stated there is no difference in starters (Bosch part number SR67X) except for the '85 Cali. What your describing with the 6:00 positioned solenoid is an '85 Cali starter (Bosch part number SR70X) made so it will clear the Trap Oxidizer on the exhaust. So the question, is does the car have a Trap Ox?

You can use the Cali starter on your car, but with the possibility the wiring a bit short to reach. Although if the car is indeed an '84, then it would prove to not be a problem.

Ooo it's gonna get hard to tell which starter is where in a second. It sounds to me like there is an '85 starter on the '84 (car with the trap ox and 6: 00 positioned solenoid)? The wiring won't be an issue on my '82 federal that's it's going on... I can handle that

If I read your post correctly, your saying it has a Trap Ox. Only the '85 Cali engine has a Trap Ox. So... either you have a car that is actually a model year 1985 or you have an '84 with an '85 engine.

There's are few easy items you can look at to see what year the car is. If it is a 1985, it would have an emissions tag that states it's for 1985 on the door jam, it would have a blue saucer vacuum thing near the fuse box (driver's side) under the hood, it would have a speedometer with a part number 123 542 27 57 on the face, and it would have a differential ratio of 2.88 (maybe not that easy to check). If it is an '84, it would have an emissions tag that states it's for 1984 on the door jam, it would not have the blue saucer vacuum thing, speedometer part number on the face is 123 542 28 57 and would have a 3.07 ratio differential.
