http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-5

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-six_engine

so wikipedia seems to favor the i5 design (imo)

More power in a i6?
i5 has better balance improvements per weight and size vs a i4?
negligible differences?

what do you gear heads think?

I am looking at all the models of benz and there motors so I will be ready to collect the best diesels in the coming decades.

What is your idea of "best" diesels?

I6 is much better. I5 engines, like the I4, are naturally unbalanced.
If you look at the firing order (1-2-4-5-3) the engine wants to rock back-n-forth unevenly, where an I6 (1-5-3-4-2-6) is naturally balanced.

MB chose to build the I-5 because they could use the existing OM615/616 design and still fit in the same area as the I6 g@ssers. If they wanted an I6 diesel they would have to design a new smaller engine, which they eventually did in 1986.

Oh I just got my first one, a w123, and I love MB style. I'm thinking about the day when there aren't so many of those left to be had. So, I was looking at lists of mercedes' oil motors.
The motor are not all as popular. I would think the next model I would want would have more valves per cylinder. The e300 turbo from 98-99 looks awesome but, why only 2 production years? Or maybe just forget benz and look at TDI(s).

I'm not sure about the # of cylinders or SOHC vs DOHC.

Forced has set me straight about the # of cylinders.
Maybe the V is even better.

The benz diesel v6 is or the v6 formation in general?

There is no need for a v6 diesel really unless your doing some more towing. Inline allows higher reving where V adds more engine brake (and torque). More cylinders is always better.

So can we agree that the i6 is the best overall configuration of the motors in the MB line?

Ditto. The SL65 AMG is the best thing ever to come out of MB's dealerships.

6cyl diesel is the way to go! The 86-87 300sdl with the om603 is a sweetheart of an engine it's fast and comfortable and can get 30mpg on the highway!

If you don't want the land-ship 300SDL you could get an 87 300TD.

I find the 87 300d to be quite ok on size. Not so great with adults in the back but that is a rariety.
