engine 617 ''dieseling"?
Hi,
Was looking for any info about but no luck.....
Im new to this diesel engine (617.931 non turbo) i have it in my 300GD after i turn key off in ignition engine stops but after ...like 5 seconds .
Is this normal for those engines ? is that why they call dieseling in gas cars becouse older diesels dont stop right away? Just wanted to make sure if this is normal .Thanks for any input
J
You have a vacuum leak. The engine should shut down immediately.
not to jack your thread but...
I am in the same boat. As I noted in a previous thread I have a similar problem with my new 617.
The engine used to stop if I had the driver door locked.
Now I have noticed It will occasionally stop but, the standard is for the motor to continue to run until I press the manual shut off.
My related question is if the occasional shutoff by key is a sign that that shutoff valve may still be functional.
I mean, can it sometimes work and sometimes not? Or if it's dead it's dead.
It wont cause any damage like on a gas engine!

I would use a handheld vacuum pump, if you use your mouth you will have a nasty taste in your mouth when your done ask me how I know...
Its my shut off valve .I conected vacum hose directlly form booster bypasing ignition and did not shut it off right away so its shut off valve foulty. How hard is it to replace this valve .My engine is one of latest from 617 non turbo series and i see inj pump is bit diferent for early models.
If it has the m-pump (actuator on top), its about as easy as easy can get.
here is how to replace it.

once you get it out you could see if it will work under vacuum. That bit costs like $150. Maybe you could seal it up with new gaskets and save $ ???
Larsalan ,thanks but my injection pump is different then on this" how to".
Force, my vacuum hose goes to plastic housing directly on top of inj pump .Is this M pump you were saying is very easy to change valve?
