I have a 240d that I am fixing up, and plan to add a turbo to later. But for now just getting everything set up right. One thing that is happening is the engine is very slow to slow down when shifting gears, it is also slow at first to rev. I am not expecting lots of power just good throttle responce. Any ideas?

Change all 3 fuel filters and make sure the linkage moves freely at the engine.

Have you owned any other Meredes diesels before?

In first gear, i must say getting off the line is pretty darn slow.
And when i put the pedel to the metal it usually does take a quick second for it to start revving.

2nd the linkage as well. Like Garage says, they are not powerful vehicles, but the linkage could be binding or sticking causing it to act like that.

I left my 240 for a month once, and the throttle linkage was totally stuck. I ended up having to lube every pivot point and work it back and forth for 5 or so minutes before it started returning normally.

Also check that you throttle linkage springs are still good, and the firewall bushing/pivot points. theres a spring down low between the injection pump and engine, and one on top of the valve cover, and maybe some more. You could have a broken one somewhere, or a combination of all problems

Also see if the idle control cable/cruise control is bound or something as well

I did adjust the idle, lower, and that helped a lot. Linkages do seem to be free. No cruise control, but the high idle linkage was binding a little.

I have been driving for about a week now, and it is burning about a quart per 50 miles. Yes 50 miles,I have never seen an engine use this much and still run nice. So an engine rebuild is in order, might as well set it up with the turbo at the same time.

Yes I do have a 300d, just have never really liked it, time to sell it and fix the 240d. Yea I know it sounds like taking a step back, but with the manuel trans, and higher rearend ratio, I don't notice much differance in power compared to the 300d, and the 240 handles nicer. Less wieght on the front must be making the differance. I think I will get less speeding tickets too......

how old is the 240? If it has a separate oil supply for the IP, then perhaps it was poorly maintained and the governor is worn out or gummed up?

either way, it sounds alot like the rack is sticking or the governor is slow to respond. ("slow to reduce rpm")

Separate oil supply for the IP? Are you saying that the oil in the pump, does not come from the engine, and needs to be changed, as it just has what is in the pump? I was wondering about the governor. Once I have the engine out I'll take a good look inside the pump.

I think by 1977 they where lubricated by the engine! Forced should know for sure though!

Yes, separate from the crankcase oil.

You'll know cuz there will be an oil fill cap on it.

All W123 have an engine lubed pump, except the 200D and 220D only sold outside the USA (they use the old OM615).

Thanks.

Will be pulling the engine soon for rebuild and will look at the pump closely once it is out. I have a 617 for parts so can get the piston squirters, oil pump, etc out of it in prep for the turbo.
