I recently purchased a ‘64 IH Scout 80 with all original parts :152 engine, 3 speed, 4x4, Dana 27, etc. North Carolina does not allow the use of non-highway rated diesel engines, so the Cummins B3.3 is not a choice. The Cummins 4BT is a possible choice, but a lot of modifications will be necessary. My son and I want to do a practical conversion, but it appears the entire drive train will need to be changed. We are looking at a diesel conversion for a daily driver/farm truck/occasional highway towing. The OM617 appears to be a good choice if we can tweek the specks. Both of us are fairly naive about this process, but look forward to the learning experience. I'm trying to put together the shopping list for such a conversion. Any suggestions?

theres a lot of excellent info on tuning and power for the 617 in the engine forum. I would also check out the http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/index.php forum as well.

Are you planning to keep the 3 speed if possible? or put in an MB tranny?

At this point, I'm considering changing the entire drive train to maximize the benefit from a diesel conversion. I have been researching for a few months now and had narrowed the engine choice down to the 4BT or the B3.3, but as stated previously, NC will not allow the B3.3. The 4BT is expensive, heavy, and noisy, but from what I have read is a really good engine. I'm not sure I need that much torque. So, is there much difference between the OM617 turbo and non-turbo engines? Will need to change out the transmission. The truck still has the Dana 27 (front and rear, I believe), so will need to change these. Bottom line, I think we are looking for something that can do some work, but also be driven on the highway and still achieve decent fuel economy.

I would think that anyone would be better served with a forced motor than a NA. Even a lighter and quicker spooling new turbo as long as your moving the 30~ year old motor around.
And the MB model built as a turbo model is allegedly more suited to turbo application and that stands to reason for me.

I have read that the 4BT's vibration can shake the recipient vehicle enough to irritate the driver. I have only seen them in cube trucks though, never put in something else, so I have no direct first hand experience with that.

I may have read somewhere, I think the owner was a suburban who did the swap, and after some service, he got tired of the whole truck vibrating whenever he slowed down. There may have been additional reasons for that though, not sure.

Yes, the turbo 617 motor has additional oiling and heat upgrades for the added stress and heat of a turbo application. There are several threads that go into this up in the engine section. Biggest differences are sodium filled valves, oil jets under the pistons for heat removal, a differently hardened crank, a different oil pump, ect.
