So. After putting the thing on a fully charged jump box again, it is still not turning over fast enough. I think we fried the starter. So I picked one up. What in the hell is the best was to extract that heavy bastard? From what I could see in a half asleep, manic rage yesterday, the best (only?) way to yank it out is to pull the exhaust manifold with turbo. Am I right in this assumption? And if so, what holds the exhaust manifold on? I unbolted the down pipe, turbo oil lines, egr and the 5 nut/studs that hold it onto the head. Anything else before I start prying on it or beating it with a dead blow?

out the bottom eh? this thing doesn't quite look like it has the clearance for that. especially the way that end supporting bracket thing is buried along with the harness and all the suspension crap in the way....

I think so, if you remove the bracket from the trans that holds the down pipe there should be enough clearance ... I think.
Those allens are a PITA eh?

Since your taking the manifolds off you should drill the exhaust for EGT while its off! And put a W115 manifold on that hoe.

ya i saw that and i didn't seem like it. well fuck it. the manifold is already 80% of the way unbolted.

i haven't even gotten to the allens yet. just making sure that when i unbolt it, i can get it out. and that allen bolt design is bullshit, but whatever lol.

exhaust is getting prepped for the egt i have. if i had the time to find a w115 mani i would. speaking of. how do you do the egr delete on the exhaust side w/o another manifold?

Haha, I like your style!

The allens are f*ckin Bull! Best to get a Allen socket chingus for a 3/8 drive ratchet and the stick a box end wrench over the allen. Its a 10mm so you don't have to waste your time wondering....

This dude @ monster craftsmen has a cheepo EGR delete, http://www.monstercraftsman.net/?l1=products Give him a call and he will sell it to you for less than whats on his website. It's just basically a dented round plate that is clamped to the end of the EGR port on the exhaust manifold.

you can pull it out the bottom relatively easily once you remove the steering shock, that will provide enough room to maneuver it down and out. You shouldn't have to remove the exhaust unless you have something non stock in there, it should finagle out if the shocks out of the way.

Also, make sure once its all said and done that you have some spring washers or lock washers on those starter bolts. I had the bolts work back out over a couple thousand miles once and the starter eventually fell out while I was cruising down the highway. Fortunately, it just sort of rested there, and I drove an additional couple hundred miles before I realized it had come out! I though I hit a rock, pulled over and checked it, but never shut the car off, luckily until I reached a city. Both bolts were totally gone. Turns out that spring washers are OEM on all bell and starter bolts, but they have all disappeared over time on a lot of cars.

There were no washers? Could have been bad luck for me then, but on the parts diagram, it does show spring washers for everything, on mine, they were all missing and that eventually happened.
Was also on a 350,000 mile motor where everything was well lubricated with oil. Big Grin Could have been a factor

ya, ill put some new ones on there. well, the manifold is almost all off. so it gives me an excuse to remove some of the other junk i wanted off anyway. is there anything else needed to remove the manifold that i can't see? bolts/etc on heat shields, supports, anything?

I think there were washers... dunno if they were spring washers though. I almost didn't get them loosened, like they were welded on. I now have a healing wound on my hand from one of them. Trust me, Stan lubed this car well, So much so there was an 1/8 inch thick grease layer on top of the starter motor. I've never been so oily in my life and it even stained my skin. Dodgy

Don't think so. Just the nuts (don't forget the one in the back) and the whole thing will slide off together.

If you need, now would be a good time to battle freeze plugs...

You're probably skipping the first one by the thermostat base on the exhaust manifold.

all the manifold bolts are off and the down pipe. wtf is that gd bracket on the turbo hooked on the mfing motor mount bracket???? anyone know what size/easiest way to take that damn thing off? also.... my buddy undid this pipe plug looking thing and a spring came out.... i take it that's the timing chain tensioner? ok to just bolt it back in?

you are doing all this labor just to get the starter out? It seriously does drop right out the bottom with the steering shock out of the way without too much difficulty or time taken. done it a bunch of times, even on the side of the road.

The nut on the engine mount arm should be the same size as the manifold nuts. 17mm? Its there as additional support for the heavy turbo assembly, a triangulation of bracing basically. Its tough to reach, but you should be able to get to it with a univeral join and some extensions.

Can you take a picture of the spring and plug you popped out? Id just put it back personally as it was but we should be sure of what it is first. Someone else will have to speak to that.

ya and i'm glad i am cuz the intake manifold needs decarbing VERY VERY badly along with a few other clean ups and mods i want entirely planning on doing, but i am now. with as much of a pain in the ass as the rest of the stuff was to do, this seemed to be the easiest route and i'm sticking with it since i made my bed in it, lol.

17mm? thats what i thought, but it was a pain to get a hold of. i'll be attacking it tonite with universals.

i can. it goes in the side of the block, to the lower right of the manifolds, lower left of the t/stat housing. 19mm plug that leads into the oil gallery. i'm pretty sure its just the timing chain tensioner.
