BLUF- what did Mercedes do differently between 1980 and 1981 to increase the horsepower on the 300SD from 110 to 125 without changing the geometry of the engine? What can be done to get the performance increase to the older engine?
Hi. I'm an officer in the US Army and recently aquired a 1979 300SD with 160k original. It's been parked in a pasture so it needs some tlc to the interior and paint but it starts up and runs probably as well as the day that it was parked.
I know a little diesel theory but have never owned one before. I'm trying to read as much as I can on the car. My guess is that between the OM617.5 and the OM617.51, Mercedes let the engine drink deeper. Is that true? I look forward to responses.
They increased lift and duration of the valve timing with a different cam.

Cam, valve springs and follower fingers. You'll also need to increase the injection quantity to get any more power.
The flip side of the coin is that you could also just turn up the fuel for more power and increase boost further than normal to compensate for the reduced airflow (far far easier and free)

there is a 'tang' holding the cover on the wastegate. It's like a coil or two from a slinky jammed in to hold the cover on. I made another adjustment to mine today.
