OM606 head bolts - are they always a bugger to remove?
OM606 head bolts - are they always a bugger to remove?
The bloke in FL that I'm buying my window'd OM606 block from has broken 3 bits trying to remove the head bolts and says that a 600ft-lb impact gun won't remove them. He had to use a breaker bar with a 36" pipe on the end of it...and got 14 bolts out after breaking the bits.
Are the head bolts always this hard to remove?
All I want is the block, but I might end up having to buy the whole dang engine.
Cheers,
Matt
Not a single soul has removed OM606 head bolts?!
Maybe this is a good thing...

Impact guns don't remove head bolts well on anything for the most part from my experience! I've always used a breaker bar!
Me too - I've never tried an impact gun on a head bolt.
The latest report is that there are 4 more bolts to go and then the head can come off... He had to weld nuts to the tops of the heads and use a regular hex socket.

If the bolts are this difficult to remove (besides the idiot factor) there is probably lots of rust on them and in the block threads.
When the bolts are removed, this can strip the aluminum head bores where the bolts go through. Not really an ideal situation.
Rust in these areas also suggests the head my have some cavities on the parting surface.
Make sure to get some really clear photos before purchase.
Idiot factor?
I'm only buying a percentage of the engine block/crank. The seller is cutting the block to save on shipping weight. It's no
big loss since the block is window'd and trashed. I'm only buying it so that I can make a CAD file of the OM606 bellhousing and crankshaft flange patterns - to allow me to bolt up a GM 4L80E in my W210.025/OM606.962.
