Finally found a GETRAG 5 speed manual
Finally found a GETRAG 5 speed manual
I got the shifter and the 3 linkage arms and the complete flywheel and clutch. The prop shafts i got was not the right length.
The numbers stamped in the housing reads: 123 260 20 01 71 7 40 0 and above that 275 0 0200.90
I tried to convince my local MB classic specialist to shoehorn it into my 300TD, but eventhough the holes in the bell matched up, he didnt like it as there was no "guiding notches" (not sure how to translate his words) to keep it in place, so all the tourque would be taken by the bolts, he didnt like that. AND i was missing the rigth length shafts.
Is this a 5 speed for a 260 gasser? Any way to make it fit?
The 4 speed manual (complete with new clutch and all bearings) and my huge reartires are back on now.. So Iḿ cruising again and evaluating the 5 speed project.
Any comments on the origin of the gearbox? Where do i get the prop shafts from? A gasser?
All comments apreciated, keep on cruizing out there!
awesome!
Can you take pictures of everything? Especially the shifter and linkage arms?
No Guiding notches? Does he mean those removable steel dowel pins to line up the bell housing? The last thing those things would be doing would be taking torque off the bell housing bolts, they are there to line the engine and tranny up properly primarily. He's worried about the torque on 7-10 heavy bell bolts?
Sounds like your local MB classic guy will be no help to you on this project.
See if the dowel pin locations on the 5-speed correlate to the dowel pin locations on the 4-speed, then you could move them to the other tranny.
You better make it fit, you are already over the first hurdle! you already have a correct bell 5-speed!
I would measure the drive shaft to be shortened/lengthened for your new application, then send it out to be custom modifed VS trying to find just the right one. You will probably also have to modify the shift linkage bars as well, they probably have to be shortened.
Hey Dropnosky, thanks for the quick reply.. I'll take som more pictures and upload them..
Is there NO way that i can find original shafts that will fit? I DO like "original" hmm .. gotta find a shop that can balance / calibrate.
The shift linkage bars should be out of a w123T .. so i HOPE they fit...
I'll return with more info.
Any comments on the robustness and reliability of the GETRAG vs. the org. 4 speed?

Yes, but either way you will have to rebalance the entire driveshaft.
Its worth the pennies it costs.
I have a comment, your alignment is off! Have you tried tightening the steering box?
Those gloves look just like mine.
