I have a 1983 240D 4spd with a tired motor. I also have a wrecked 1983 300TD automatic with an excellent engine. The 300TD engine is being pulled with all of its accessories. I would like to hear from those who have done this. I would like to keep my 4 speed trans. I expect I will need the drive shaft, rear end, and radiator. What else will I need? Will I have difficulties moving the transmission back to accommodate the longer engine? Any other tips would also be appreciated.

Its been done many times by many people. They are usually very happy with the conversion and have all but sworn off automatics.

You will want the front springs and the front sway bar from that TD if you can get em. You can safely take 2 coils off the front.

A spring swap isn't really necessary. My 240D rides at a normal-looking height and doesn't have abnormal tire wear with the stock springs. The only thing I've changed on my suspension the larger rear swaybar upgrade.

Its like swapping the differential or cooling system. If you can, do it. If you can't, don't worry about it.

A spring swap isn't really necessary. My 240D rides at a normal-looking height and doesn't have abnormal tire wear with the stock springs. The only thing I've changed on my suspension the larger rear swaybar upgrade.

I have the entire 300TD. It is smashed (front drivers side) but all mechanical parts are good minus some driver’s side suspension. It is still very fun to drive in the woods. Springs are no problem but how does the sway bar remove? I wouldn’t mind having the sway bar out of my way. It is making it hard to get the top two transmission bolts.

Did you swap out your differential? I use my 240D to commute and would like to keep the RPMs down! The 300TD AC system would be nice too but that is a completely separate project.

I have the entire 300TD. It is smashed (front drivers side) but all mechanical parts are good minus some driver’s side suspension. It is still very fun to drive in the woods. Springs are no problem but how does the sway bar remove? I wouldn’t mind having the sway bar out of my way. It is making it hard to get the top two transmission bolts.

Yes, I swapped the 3.69 for a 3.46 and I'm considering the 3.07.

Going 69 to 46 is a 6.6% drop in RPM. At 60mph that would be going from 3200 to 3000rpm. I saw a 3mpg average gain from it.
69 to 07 is 20.2% and go from 3200rpm to 2700rpm.

Battery tray comes out and the UCA has to come off the ends. It is a two person job as it takes some fidgeting in and out. Springs require a Klann type compressor. These would be an upgrade for even an average omn617.95x driver. If they are free and you have time go for it. 70% stiffer than stock iirc.

Yes, rear bar is the same. The bigger rear bar was only used on special applications like ambulances and hearses.

What about the Tach? Did you use the 300TD instrument cluster?
