hi, i need some kind of advice

i was reading the site over last several days trying to find out any finalised solutions for om603 non-turbo engine upgrade (603.931). unfortunately found no one yet.
the stock engine provides quite "slow old man style" driving on the almost 3 ton truck (113hp, 190nm). especially I face lack of torque in mud or on the highway with 35" tires.
so i need your advice on what could I do provided I need to keep the block original (unchanged). another important point - i would like to keep minimum level of electronics. the hps are not important but lowend torque is the key.

initially i considered putting om606 head (non-turbo) - ie change the setup to 4 valves one and revise the pump to add a bit more fuel. perhaps installing 6-7mm.

I was never thinking of turbo modifications as I simply was not aware of any good lowend torque solutions. probably there are some - that's why i need your advice on.

not sure yet that my block could fit 606 turbo - this is another potential solution but it requires some electronics + turbo and IC to be added....


So the questions are:
- would it ever make any torque wise sense to install 606 non-turbo and increase fueling?
- any ideas of the better minimal electronics lowend torque solutions?

PS my lovely g-wagon is used as a daily car but it is updated to fit my expedition truck requirments

go for larger elements and delivery valves.
Start with this mod, if this is not enough it gets expensive and you will need larger elements anyway.

thanks - i'm aware that ld add 606 non-turbo will add just 23hp and 20nm through double camshaft and 4 valves per cylinder. I hope your experience could add some new ideas provided I dont want significantly increase fuel consumption....Tongue

Hi Kotka,

Nice truck! My UNIMOG has only 82HP (2.2l) turning 37" tires and weighs 6250 pounds. THAT'S old man! Smile These small engines need high RPM's to generate any power - especially the non-turbo models. The 606 does virtually nothing below 3500 RPM.

What is your goal? Do you want to go faster in the mud or just have the power to move through the thick stuff? You might consider changing the differential ratios but that will sacrifice top speed.

1998 MB E300 - 194,000 miles. Current/future mods: 7.5mm pump elements, Holset HX40 Turbo feeding Eaton M90 supercharger through custom fabbed intake system. Aeroturbine muffler, scratch-built 4" stainless exhaust. EGR eliminated, ECM recalibrated, modified rack position feedback circuit. the initial purpose - is the expedition vehicle. I will send it to Latvia for complete restoration / modification in a couple of month - 20 years old veteran needs some nice care Shy

i use it for daily drive as well. I dont feel too slow on the streets but realy hate high rpms and need more low end torque.

the axles are 37:7 or 5.27:1 - the most powerful axle ratio of g-class. i will get my bolt on portals (5 inch) prduced in March Tongue. the new axle ratio will be roughly 4.77:1 which will increase top speed but will slower the acceleration and torque on the wheels....

so that's why i need to add more power to engine provided i keep fuel consumption at the reasonable level....as this is an expedition truck Big Grin

Hello, i have the same axle gearing as you but i think it is 5.28 it is the same as the military use at G290diesel.
Do you have more information about portal axle , price , manifactor, picture?.
i also drive offroad, i will go to Arctic trophy at Kola peninsuela for the 4 time in september.

Yes, the 603 mechanical pump fits fine on the 606 block. So just find a better mechanical pump (easier said than done lol). There is also a mechanical NA 606 pump on the 94-95 cars, that should give a little more fuel than an NA 603 pump.
