Hey guys ive been lurking for awhile and I decided to finally join.

I have a 1980 300sd that has 400k on it that i got from the original owner with all receipts service records etc...
Well anyways ive already done a few things to it... It has a straight exhaust and a custom intake and a ccv mod that letsthepersonbehindyou deal with it lol. Oh and the important stuff.. Removed rack limiter, pump turned up till it almost wont return to idle and the alda removed, electric fan off a 960 volvo, wastegate un hooked right now but ill get my boost controller on it soon.

I originally had a 78 240 that was my first car and i liked it except for the severe lack of power. If you are interested i have a friend that took a volvo 15g turbo and turbo'd a 240.

You have a boost controller built-in, the wastegate. 20psi is far too much as well, 12psi is all thats useful for stock fueling and with the pump maxed out no more than 14psi is needed to burn all the fuel. Any more is just making heat, restricting the exhaust and stressing the headgasket.

At 30psi you're actually making less power than stock because the compressed air is so hot its less dense than the air is at 12psi.

It's defiantly not slower. I walk on my friends wagon like nothing on top end. I do understand that it's making that little turbo a hair dryer. The Wg hose is trashed and I need a new one.

I have a intercooler setup that I need to install but I've been to busy lately to fab it up. I have a few different turbos I wanted to try but havent got to it yet. I actually had a
Gt2256v turbo in my hands today but man that thing is tiny. I have a friend at a injection shop and he's going to build me a pump. I was talking to him about a 10mm mw pump. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I'm not sure how well these idi's will do but my idi in my bronco cant handle as much as theses things lol.
Btw I have 2 spare complete engines in the garage one of them dropped a precup but all else is good. And a trans too lol.

Will do... I actually used to work for a fuel injection shop...
I hooked the wq back up this morning and it lost alot of the top end power. Ill be adjusting the wg sometime soon but i blew my turbo in my bronco tonight pulling some people out of the mud. It sucked a silicon hose into it.

Im watching cl for a set of decent 17" wheels for the thing but the ones i wanted they sold last week..

Thats because its so extremely slow to spool. If you chose a turbo that properly matches your engine you won't have such bad lag and surge.

I like it. And once I get more fuel in the thing the top end power and egt bonus of the bigger turbo will really shine. It actually on feels a tiny bit slower to spool up than stock. An with less boost and the same fuel my calibrated butt dyno says it has a little more power. The stock turbo was on it's way out so i had a choose from my turbo selection. Hy35w, hx40w, t3/to4e, 16t mitsu, or a t6 flanged monster that would never spool.

I like the hy35 so far.

Uh I was fully boosted burning out. Let off with any turbo car while its fully loaded when the tires want to stop real fast without a bov and tell me what happens. Click the stock video its 100x worse.

Do you know what a real surge is? Reversion? I'd appreciate if you keep your opinion to yourself since you seem to keep having to back pedal on your word.

You have no real world experience on this huh? Put any turbo car under a high load and slow the engine down real fast by either shutting a throttle body or stopping the fuel, I bet that all of them that don't have a blowoff or a recirc valve will get alittle surge or flutter. I bet your vnt car will do it too. There are very few diesels that I have seen that won't and they are all either drive by wire or common rail.
The stick turbo did it worse.

Your first post made it sound like it was going to surge under a load. Or have you ever even seen that? Like when you little vnt gets stuck and creates to much back pressure and the boost pressure cannot over come it and it causes reversion. That's true surge. Everyone know that a turbo will flutter with out a bov and a situation like this.

No, I properly matched the turbo to my car. Even the T3 on my 240 doesn't do it.

Incorrect. I suggest you research what surge actually is since you clearly believe it to be this loud sewing machine type sound as ricers and other hackers think. FYI, there is far more to surge than what you can hear.

That's not a hx35 in your pic.

I call bs that your vnt won't do it in the same situation.

I've seen stock trucks and cars with vnt turbos surge when they let off.

Sewing machine sound? Uh. I clearly explained what surge is.

Thanks for ruining my thread.
Oh and I can go from full boost on the street and let off and it won't do it.
Oh and notice it didn't "surge" the second time I let off? It's because there was less load on it and the engine didn't instantly drop rpm.

(01-11-2011, 05:19 PM)dieselboy Im curious to how the om617 will respond to nitrous.
You must be overfueled before it will do anything.

Quote:"I was told my turbo is too big and all it would would do is surge"
It is.

Quote:Oh and a vnt Holset is nothing like the STD hx35.
Incorrect. It is identical in every way except the housings. Same turbine, shame bearings, same compressor same compressor housing A/R. Please try to not make a fool of yourself anymore by posting such guesses.

Quote:Put down the books, haterade, conventional thinking, and see the proof on video.
I do, plenty of surge.

Ive put 100mi on it already and I like it.

Driving down the freeway is awesome you just want to keep giving it more throttle to hear those sweet sweet noises. Drivin next to a wall or a k-rail is insane. The turbo just screams in boost.

(01-11-2011, 11:07 PM)dieselboy The cartridge might be the same but the housings make a big difference
Incorrect.

Quote:and the compressor does look different to me.
It helps if you know what you are actually looking for. I have had the HE341v and HX35 compressor wheels in my hands, they are physically identical down to the part number.

Quote:Put that big of a load on any turbo engine and snap the throttle off and it will.
Skilled drivers would not abuse their vehicle in such a manner.

Quote:So your telling me that the stock turbo is a worse match for this engine than my hx35?
Incorrect. The stock turbo is well capable of 18psi boost, all you've done is increase lag time to get the exact same horsepower.

Quote:All I'm doing here is making a fool of myself.
Correct.

I've been a professional diesel tech for 12 years. I've worked on your single cylinder diesel generators to a man b&w ship engine.

Ive seen a few swedes that are running the hx35 and even the hx40 and they seem to have no real problems so thats why I'm doing it. It seems there are only a few om617s that are heavily modified on this side of the pond.

I have a few in car videos but YouTube isn't letting me upload anything for some reason. I'll get a driveby video and maybe a burnout if I can get it to power brake instead of sliding the front tires. The rear tires are massive lol.

Oh and I have several sets of rims for the bronco. I have a set of H2 17" aluminum rims a set of STD 16"s and the double bead locked millitary hummer h1 rims that have the newer style 12bolt rim.
Well if came out like crap but I'll re upload it in hd later. You can hear my door panel rattle like crazy at idle lol.
