240d OM616 grey smoke-bad milage-poor idling when cold
Hello everyone,
Last year I bought a truck 307d with the 240d (om616) motor which was build in 1979 and have some problems since I bought the car.
This motor has no turbo.
It takes about 6 seconds to start when cold a few less when the engine is warm.
Cold start sets the whole street in a grey fog, when warm there's very little to no smoke, starting when engine is warm gives again a quite amount of grey smoke.
Idling when cold is terrible, the engine is running slow, shakes but doesn't stall.
Power is not enough, especially in 5th gear, sometimes the truck reaches 110 km/h but most of the time 70-80 km/h is max.
Then the milage, it uses 1 liter diesel on 8 km, pretty bad compared to other trucks which reach 10-12 km each liter.
Things done:
fuel pre filter
main fuel filter
motor oil
motor oil filter
I think the engine gets too much diesel, does anyone recognize this problem?
Nozzles, valve timing, IP?
Where can I buy nozzles for a good price?
Thanks for helping!
when was the last valve adjustment?
Glow plugs are working?
for nozzles check out www.dieselcoupe.de
Do you have coolant consumption?
Did you ever do a compression test?
Tom
doing a valve adjustment has fixed smokey idle and poor top end performance for me every time. i would do the adjustment first. if you still have problems i would check the timing, and make sure the engine can breathe out both ends.
Thanks for your help!
Guess I'll do the valve adjustment first, seems like I need a special tool.
Don't know when done the last time.
Thought it wasn't necessary since the valves are not noisy.
It's smoke and not steam (coolant) but not fully burned diesel oil.
Is there a possibillity to control the amount of diesel on the outside of the pump?

Ok guys at what point would you start to question possible bad valve seals or piston rings?
I have adjusted the valves and now the motor runs like a new one!
Perfect idle and very quiet!
Still smokey cold start and running bad when cold, guess I'll change the glow plugs.
Thanks everyone for your info!
