O.K. guys, first post and a weird one at that.

I am in the process of putting a OM617 in a street rod.

This attachment is not the car, but a close approximation.

I fell into a T-56 6-speed out of a Viper and have the adapters to install behind the OM617. (still need to make the pilot bearing)

The 6-speed has ratios of 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .74 and .50. Reverse is 2.90.

I don't have the limitations you guys have on final gear ratios as I am using a 9" Ford rearend. I can get ring & pinions of 2.40 to 7.33, so I can set it up with about anything.

Tires on the rear will be approx. 30" tall.

The car weighs 2000-2100 pounds.

The engine will probably not get much done to it other than the normal clean-up and maintenance. I do have a W115 intake and may use it eventually.

So, what are your thoughts on the final drive ratio? Highway cruise speed would be in the 70-80 mph range. When at street rod events we cruise around at a slow walking speed, so 1st gear being real low is OK.

My concerns are being able to pull the overdrives.

I am sure I will get some flak for not building a 'normal' car, but the grill shell is from a MB.

Thanks for the help.

You should set it up for 3500rpm@70 in 4th. That will give good acceleration to 100mph in 4th with good top speed in 5th and good economy in 6th.
1st will be a bit low, but if you go much taller 6th will become unusable.

Is it turbo or n/a? With a .50od turbo I'd say 4.10. Non turbo I'd go with 4.56 or 5.13ish. .50 is a huge overdrive. That would give you a nice low 1st and a decent cruise rpm in od

Thanks guys.

Using the 3500 rpm @ 70 mph I came up with 4.10 gears also.

Again, thanks for the help.

What size wheels and tires are on the rear end Captain?

I have two sets to choose from.

16" wire wheels w/28" tall tires or 20" steelies w/30" tall tires.

Not sure which I will go with yet.
